For you relative newbies, here's a brief video on the (almost) first anniversary of Freeping, highlighting the inimitable and greatly missed Dr. Raoul and others.
Bump!
My first exposure to FR was when I was shouting down the illegal 2000 recount at the Broward County courthouse. We were literally in the street, faced off against the Gore-bots with a police enforced no man’s land in between. There was some guy who would sneak around behind the gore-bots and every time a camera would pan to them he would lift a big FREE REPUBLIC sign without them realizing it.
I guess I was FReeping without realizing it.

We stand on the shoulders of giants.
Freepers were the precursor to the Tea Party. Many times we experienced the nicest folks - “people who make the country work” according to Rush - coming up to us quietly and saying, “Thank you for doing this.” We were the beginning of people realizing they were not alone. We were the spark.

Coyote = Ace. that has always been my guess.
He was indeed. Too bad hes not around any more.

Thanks for the confirmation. I assume that you mean that he has departed this world. Very sad.
She wrote an article in the Times about our Puget Sound FReeper Chapter's first FReeper Meet in June 1998. I owe her a lot because the article made me sound so much smarter than I really am.
Great video. I joined in the leadup to the 2000 election. Attended a rally in Birmingham where we heard about the “stay” on further vote counts. Whole crowd started chanting “We got a Stay!”.
I assume that you mean that he has departed this world.
I have no independent confirmation of that. Had some email back and forth with him after he left the forum, though. He never said anything specific but Im pretty sure he was sick and not long for this world.
He was one of the best posters this forum ever had, IMO.

Don’t forget Little Lulu.
Nope.
Barbara Olsen and Tony Snow, too.
Damn, Im old....

Oh, yeah. Deb and her battles with A+Bert make the heart sing. I have “urine-soaked old rummy” archived as a phrase for the ages.
Oh, you’re one of those “newbies”!?!? :O
from Rush to Drudge to FR....as soon as I got a computer with internet my life changed...when we got hi speed, it became a true blessing..
I seem to remember something about closing all the tags.
David Limbaugh.
Mark Levin.
Bill Triplett.
Others I’m sure.
Even über-RINO Hugh Hewitt would talk about and promote Free Republic.
It sure was a different time.
Back before groupthink became the norm on FR.
I lurked in 97 after finding FR on Drudge. Introduced the ‘soon to be’ Mrs Conan to FR shortly after that. Enjoyed the Whitewater/impeachment threads, and, remember watching the video the day of the impeachment vote with the Dims getting on a bus to drive to rally with Slick. I think it was a Saturday, because I was the only person at work. I had to make up time because I was taking my Dad to chemo during the week. He was there for our wedding, but, didn’t last much longer than that. FR helped me through that.
But, for some reason, I never joined until Sept 98, the day before we got married.
Go figure.
Ah. A+bert. I remember that dude. Seems he got zotted along the way and came back as bert and wanted to get his a+ back. Not sure exactly about how that went but a+bert was a piece of work.
