I have a theory about rock n roll bands that I havent really expressed to many people, but I will offer it here.
I think any rock n roll band that wants to consider itself serious needs to be able to competently perform a certain set of standard rock songs. If they cant play these songs, they should just stop the music and get day jobs.
Im talking about classic songs that are basic to the genre.
Let me explain.
Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were not blues musicians. However, they knew enough about music to know any band worth its salt had to be able to perform certain standards at any time.
Thus The Blues Brothers were born. The idea led to a hit album called Briefcase Full of Blues, which contained the standards, and a hit movie. The song Soul Man, was immortalized thanks to The Blues Brothers.
So it should be with any competent rock band. If you want to be good, if you want to entertain, there are certain basics which must be mastered.
But which songs are the songs that must be part of any competent bands repertoire.

PDRR does BB as BB sounded in Surf era (1961-1965), before age, wear, drugs, alcohol, and smoking took their toll on the band members.
Starting with Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys evolved enormously. Their middle period (1966-1973) has some extraordinary, unique music that almost never gets airplay (since they were effectively boycotted from emerging FM radio in the late 60s, and so are left off classic rock playlists now), but was highly influential to classic rockers like David Crosby, Graham Nash, Tom Petty, Elton John, Ann & Nancy Wilson, as well as later acts like Yo La Tengo, REM, etc.
Brian’s singular genius, his drug use, Van Dyke Parks vs. Mike Love, Carl Wilson’s conscientious objector status, all contributed to the dissension in the group, which led to two critical choices that changed their status:
Brian pulled the plug on SMiLE in early 1967, and pulled out of headlining the Monterey Pop Festival in Summer 1967. Both of those were huge blows, and they lost a lot of fan and critic support.
Had SMiLE preceded Sgt. Pepper’s, as planned, and had they headlined at Monterey, their later music would certainly have been better received.
Financial needs essentially forced them to become an Oldies act in 1974.
The original Capitol SMiLE tapes were finally released in 2011 on CD and LP. (Prior to that, it had become one of the most heavily bootlegged albums in rock history.)
But you are correct: Papa Doo Run Run is an excellent cover band.

Good choices - maybe add “Wild Thing” just for giggles.
“Tarkus” by ELP. Once a band masters that, they can play just about anything ever composed.
Pls excuse my age, back in the late 50’s if an up and coming doowop group could sing ‘Sometimes when I’m all alone” acapella, Danny + Juniors flip of “At The Hop”, they had a lot of potential. Just sayin.
Nobody wants to hear some no account wedding band play their own stuff. It will be crap for sure.

That cracked me up. The DJ at the skating rink of my youth would play Whipping Post for Couples Skate.
I agree with you on Clapton. Not that he wasnt a great player in his day. But Duane Allman was better.
Thanks for that info. My understanding is that The Beatles took the harmonizing of the BB and incorporated it into their songs.
Interesting like the original Beatles were called The Golden Beatles in the beginning.
Actually it was the Silver Beatles. ;)

The Silver Beetles - The Beatles Wiki The Silver Beetles was one of the earlier band names before The Beatles. John Lennon wanted a name that sounded English. He wanted The Crickets, but Paul McCartney, laughing, said, "I think that's already taken."It was Stuart Sutcliffe who suggested they call themselves The Silver Beatles.
This is all so confusing.
