Pit bulls used to be a very family friendly breed of dog. But breeders started breeding them to be aggressive in the 70s and 80s and continued to do so today. If you get a pit bull from a good breeder that is not breeding the dog to be large and aggressive you will likely get a very good family dog.
The dog on Little Rascals was a pit bull.

Good post jpsb. Informative, fair and balanced
All the breeders I know are very responsible.
They breed for good stable Temperament and Confirmation.
They screen all potential buyer and have contracts with takeback clauses if there is any indication of irresponsibility.
They educate all buyers on the principles of responsible dog ownership and warn of potential problems and how to avoid them.
I illustrated some of the points in this
post and how they related to my breeders and my dog.
Some trace the start of popularity among the thug culture
and irresponsible dog owners with this Sports Illustrated cover.
