Today I lost my companion of 13 years. He was in early onset kidney failure back in January. He'd been on medication to manage it and seemed to be doing fine. He was eating, sleeping, drinking water, playing, etc..
This morning he urinated almost all blood and I rushed to the vet and was informed his kidneys were deteriorating and it was just a matter of time now.
I had to make the painful decision I've had to make before with each one of my dogs and that decision never gets any easier.
My ex-wife came to be with me so I wouldn't have to do this alone. I held Teddy as he passed telling him to go find Jerry, Sandy, Shiner and Licker (yes that was his name) and to play with them. I told him I'd see him soon and asked our Lord to send all my boys over the hill to get me when my time comes.
I'll see you soon Teddy. I love you and I miss you so much already!
Thank you Jesus for entrusting that wonderful, beautiful animal to my care and all the lessons I learned through him. I have no regrets for letting that animal into my heart and my life. Thank you so much!

I lost a Cockapoo to renal failure at just 3 years of age. Pretty much a losing battle since the symptoms dont show till its almost to late. Learned a lot from that one.
Spent a lot of money to try and save her. But..the time came.
Good dogs always steal your heart and then leave.
The one I have now is 13 years old and is, as usual, the most gentle and loving dog.
The day is coming though.

Bless his heart...it’s so hard.
My German Shepherd died suddenly and was so sick I needed help getting him to the vet, where I found out how bad he was. Very hard.
Yep, they steal our hearts alright and never give them back. :-)

To have loved and then said farewell,is better than to have never loved at all. For all the time that you have stopped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treats and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.
I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each other’s lives. My life was full because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my friend.
Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the sun shines gently down upon all of God’s creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no such thing as sickness, no aching joints and no aging.
We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that together is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companionship such as yours is so rare and unique.
Don’t hold the love that you have within your heart. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love really never dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

My deepest condolences. Dogs are God’s special gift to mankind. Losing such a dear friend is so hard, but Teddy was blessed to have lived his life surrounded by a loving family.I read your post, and with tears in my eyes I laid on the floor and held my precious little Corgi Mackenzie close to me.

Please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of your dear friend. It IS very hard to let them go...but, also don’t want them to suffer. I’m sure Teddy knew how much you loved him. And, imho, he’s now running and playing with all the furry friends who greeted him and telling them how you loved him and how well you cared for him.
Yes, that was the hardest one I ever had to deal with.
Went from a bouncing young fun dog to death in a couple months.
And I had her trained for bird hunting. That dog went where ever I went.

I do so undertand your pain. We lost Duchess, aka Madam, on the 10th. She was our “little girl” (we have four boys so when son #2 talked about getting us a dog I insisted that it be a female) for almost 15 years. She was an Old English bulldog and the life expectancy of that breed is 10-14 years, so we were especially blessed to have as long as we did.
She’s been slowly fading over the last two years, but she was a dry stubborn dog and she kept going albeit slower. I made her bone broth at least twice a week as some days she went through a quart, but it seemed to help her. At least she enjoyed it. On the 9th, it was clear she was very close to the end. Mr Kitty sat with her most of the day. At 1:00AM on the 10th, Mr Kitty helped up on to “her” chaise and fed her some broth from a little medicine cup and she fell asleep.
I prayed to God to take in her in sleep so she wouldn’t suffer and so we wouldn’t have to take her on “the last ride.” Kid woke us up at 6am and said she had passed. We wrapped her in her favorite blanket and buried out by the garden. I still find my self in tears and we all miss her terribly.

So sorry. That’s a loss I know well. My 14 year old maltese mix is at my side as he usually is. He’s a clinger. I’ll be a wreck when he goes. Glad you called your ex for support. Hang in there. Prayers for your comfort.

Get yourself a new dog and maybe a shelter cat, nothing better than a good pet.
Prayers up for you all, good sir. Those furry sorts, certainly leave a large empty place in our hearts when they go, but Teddy is grateful that your love for him was strong enough to help him when he needed you the most...

Loss of a “forever” dog like Teddy id one of the hardest things a human goes through. We have our 6th Labrador retriever now, a chocolate named Nugget. She follows Duke, Daisy, Nessie, Titus, and Jewel. They were all wonderful dogs in their own way but Nugget is the best one of all. I can’t imagine losing her but if I outlive her, that will happen. I recently saw a license plate frame which obviously belongs to a dog lover: Always by my side, forever in my heart.
Get yourself a new pup and that will mend your heart. Teddy does not want his dad to be sad.
