I dont know whether the Murphy Brown reboot planned for fall will be funny, but I do know its going to be political. At Tuesdays CBS upfront the annual unveiling of new fall shows for the networks to sell to advertisers Candice Bergen was on hand to introduce a peek at the first new season of Murphy Brown since the show went off the air in 1998 after 10 seasons. Bergen, looking impish and energetic at age 72, said that we wanted to stay really topical, so we didnt shoot a pilot because if we did wed already be several news cycles and Stormys out of date.
I wonder if Bergen and the network really comprehend the potential resistance theyre going to face with this new Murphy Brown. The network theyre satirizing Fox News is going to be out there full-force, stirring up animosity among their viewers for this liberal sitcom. This will be especially true if the network and its audience believe that Roseanne has been muzzled for its conservative views.
Its not as though Murphy Brown has never been political before this, of course. That son shell soon be competing against is the same born-out-of-wedlock child that inspired real-life criticism from Vice President Dan Quayle back in 1992. Bergen whose movie career is still active with the comedy Book Club opening this weekend isnt shying away from the Fox News comparisons: Cable news is populated with all kinds, like the Hannitys of the world and actual journalists too, she said. The new Murphy Brown will have a combination of old and new cast members, including Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, and Grant Shaud from the original cast. CBS has ordered 13 episodes for a fall premiere.

Lol!
I guess that Depends...
Faith Ford... Yum!
AGHHHHH!!! My eyes feel like they’ve been hit with bear spray!
Where’s the eyewash fountain!!?
Candice Bergen has not aged well, to put it very mildly.
She was almost funny as Murphy Brown (Newt Gingrich once appeared) because she was ideological only 95% of the time.
Never thought I’d be cheering for Roseanne. Maybe each will satirize the other’s show in their own. That’d be a hoot.
Her head looks three sizes too big!

2003
It reminds me of this series. It lasted one season.
And they spent most of the episodes taking shots of another Republican President George W. Bush.
They ran out of material, and of course nobody watched it.
She got her brains from her dad:
The results will be similar to conservative radio vs. liberal radio.
Remember Air America?
Yeah I’m sure it will be lots of laughs. It is coming out just as even ash holes like Kimmel are realizing the people don’t want “plenty of liberal laughs.” One season at most.
Murphy will not likely be the hit Roseanne has been. Murphy is not a sympathetic character and Candice is certainly not; being one of the Hollywood elite has done nothing for her but to age her in an unbecoming fashion.
It would be most interesting to see Robert Pastorelli and Sienfeld’s Kramer once again on a weekly basis.
Cybil Sheppard and Bruce Willis rebooting?? It will never be seen. Cybil and Bruce have moved on from Moonlighting in their different directions. And the premise of Moonlighting? It was a very good series until romance and jealousy entered the picture It suffered greatly when finally, thankfully, was given the old heave ho.
this will crash and burn no doubt in my mind
Every time I hear a fact about how kids suffer in a fatherless household, I think about all the liberal pigs who mocked Dan Quayle in defense of Murphey Brown liberals. It still makes my blood boil.
IIRC Candice Bergen eventually acknowledged that Dan Quayle was right.
I’ve been catching up with the Roseannes. Not bad but not as good as the original.
But I did enjoy the muslim episode. Particularly when Roseanne tried to break into her muslim neighbor’s internet password by typing “DeathtoAmerica123.” Roseanne: you’re funny.
I see another show that will be canceled soon.
Maybe I’m wrong, but other than the “Dan Quayle” episode, my recollection is that the “political humor” on the original show was more along the lines of what Carson did back in the day: relatively harmless one liners about politicians in both parties.
If they’re going to go “all NeverTrump all the time” they’ll probably wear out their welcome pretty fast.
And it doesn’t help that Candace Bergen isn’t exactly the willowy MILF anymore.
Nearly everything, including kids cartoons is full of nothing but liberal slant... the idea of another left wing show, regardless of a reboot or not is just more of the same.
If I handed this article in as a 6th grade assignment I would have had to repeat the grade.
This guy gets paid for this ?
You've got to be a good ventriloquist on the radio so no one sees hears your lips move …
By the way, I believe Charlie McCarthy was her "real" dad, at least in the brains department!
I saw Candace Bergen on a commercial and her face looked she got stung by one, big, killer bee. Ouch!
Botox kills. Slowly. It seems to go for the brain first, at least in Candace’s case.
