NASCAR News Novant Health receives $1.2 million gift from NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr. and cancer awareness advocate Sherry Pollex
This evening during the 9th annual Catwalk for a Cause fundraising event, 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. and his partner, Sherry Pollex announced a $1.2 million gift to Novant Health from the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation. The gift will be used to establish the Novant Health Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Children’s Emergency Department in Huntersville and the SherryStrong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic in Charlotte.
“This remarkably generous gift from the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation will help Novant Health strengthen our community by ensuring cancer patients achieve optimal health and healing and children have access to life-saving emergency services,” said Dr. Andrew Mueller, senior vice president of Novant Health and president of the greater Charlotte market.
The Novant Health Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Children’s Emergency Department, scheduled to open at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center in 2019, will be the only one of its kind devoted exclusively to caring for children and teens open 24 hours a day, seven days a week serving the Lake Norman communities. The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Children’s Emergency Department will be designed to meet the needs of children and their families and will include a colorful waiting room, a triage room, nine private exam rooms, and the most advanced child-sized medical equipment. It will be staffed by physicians, nurses and other medical providers specially trained in pediatric emergency medicine.
The Novant Health SherryStrong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic will be housed in the new John M. and Claudia W. Belk Heart and Vascular Institute and Edward I. and Agnes B. Weisiger Cancer Institute, currently under construction at the corner of Fourth Street and Queens Road in Charlotte and scheduled to open in 2020. The Novant Health SherryStrong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic will enhance the current Novant Health Integrative Medicine program, which takes a holistic approach to managing the physical and emotional effects of cancer treatment, recovery and survivorship by combining a range of complementary therapies and healthy lifestyle practices with modern medicine. In 2014, Pollex was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and in May 2016, she launched SherryStrong.org to empower women to know their bodies, recognize the symptoms of ovarian cancer and learn how integrative and holistic practices may complement conventional medicine.
“Sherry and I are incredibly proud to partner with Novant Health to make a meaningful impact on patients while supporting causes that have touched our hearts and our lives,” said Truex. “We hope that our contributions will provide healthy and positive outcomes for adults living with cancer and children who need specialized emergency medical care.”

The final stop of Martin Truex Jr.‘s championship tour will be Monday on the South Lawn of the White House.
Truex, the defending Cup Series champion, and other members of Furniture Row Racing will meet with President Donald Trump during a ceremony scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET, according to an advisory from NASCAR.
Truex’s visit is the first for a NASCAR champion during the Trump Administration. There was not a White House visit last year for Jimmie Johnson‘s seventh championship.
A Furniture Row Racing spokesman confirmed to NBC Sports that Truex’s crew chief, Cole Pearn, who has taken shots at the president on Twitter, also will attend the ceremony Monday.
Trump and NASCAR have intersected numerous times over the past three years, well before the 45th president of the United States took office.
On Feb. 18, President Trump tweeted an acknowledgment of the Daytona 500.

Martin and Sherry have been fairly hush hush about the cancer. Martin has stayed true to Sherry throughout this whole mess. He took care of Her and Wins the NASCAR Cup Championship all at the same time.

I’m staring 70 in the face and hurt all over because of youthful exuberance. My mind is still as sharp as a tack not counting losing my keys and glasses and random forgetfulness. Getting old is no joke used to be a joke when I heard it. No longer.
