Assad a good guy, and an Orthodox Christian?

I have some questions.

I’ll go with he’s less evil than some in that part of the world, because after all, he protected Christian Syrians when he was in full control of the country. Of course, he still hates Israel, which is par for that part of the world... that could be better.

But, I thought the Assads were Alawites, which is somewhat Shia in orientation, and is part of why he gets Iranian support. (Of course, their support also facilitates their expansion and control of Hezbollah in Lebanon).

Can you enlighten me further on Assad’s religion?

I never stated his religion I only know what his soldiers think of him by following their twitter accounts. If I could find a couple of articles answering your question I will post them.:^)

He is an Alawite. Muslim sect that significantly rejects sharia. Probably why they seem to get along with their neighbors more the ‘regular’ Muslims. His dad was also Baathist so he is as well but that is political. However same dogma as ole Saddam.

They drink, don’t do the hijab and believe in a trinity. Among other reasons I believe they are probably derived from an old orthodox group driven underground.
