But I don’t personally know of any kids that are doing this (or real similar activities), although we have 5 grandkids in the house who introduce many of their friends.

Neither do I. Nor can I recall ever seeing kids doing anything other than playing mindless video games. But they are clearly out there. There are lots of big contests and model car clubs.
