grey_whiskers *APPROVED*. I like what C.S. Lewis said, that eating and reading are two pleasures that combine admirably. It would be a kind of blasphemy to read poetry at table. What one wants is a sort of gossipy, formless book that can be opened anywhere (I believe he recommended Tristam Shandy for this purpose.)

Its funny that you mentioned this because just this afternoon I told my son that its time to re-read Les Miserables. Been too long. I like to take a looooong time to read it because its written so beautifully!
