GREENVILLE, S.C. A $1,030 fine for cheering at a graduation ceremony?
An administrator at a South Carolina school warned students and parents about the possibility, according to the Greenville News.
The newspaper reported that a slide shown at a school assembly said the following:
Since graduation is a dignified and solemn occasion, graduating seniors and their guests should behave appropriately. Please ask your guests not to call out, cheer, whistle, or applaud during the reading of names and presentation of diplomas.
The citation for family members yelling out is $1,030.

People should know how to behave in public - particularly at events that justify some solemnity.
Sadly, there are impolite Americans who do not. OK, so they need to be told
Even more sadly, then there are entitled and self-centered Americans, who after being told, still insist on acting like a fool. What to do with those people?
When I was graduated 30 years ago the hooting after each name wasn't part of the culture. When my first kid graduated from Jr. high several years ago I couldn't believe how everyone carried on. It took forever. Now we just skip the ceremonies and go out to a nice dinner.
That’s just crazy.
This administrator said people would be fined the $1,030 and the Greenville police would be enforcing it under a "disrupting a public event ordinance". Then the news station asked the Greenville police and they said that they didn't have the slightest idea what he was talking about and cheering at a graduation wouldn't even fall under the provision.
Needless to say, if you are an administrator who is going to make a lie to try to scare people into complying, you should probably do a little better than one that make you a laughing stock with one phone call.
I agree. At one graduation I attended, the cheers drowned out the names, for one student a megaphone was used, and somebody was called a bad name. The cheering and clapping should be left to the end.
How about the dean reading the names just wait until the noise dies down?
Because a 1 hour ceremony can become a very tiresome 4 hour ceremony.
The specific of a $1030 fine is absurd, but the cheering and such are still a problem.
And there ya have it folks.
Game. Set. Match.
It’s like feeding time at the monkey cage at the zoo. Such screeching, hollering and bellowing.
Get in line behind Rent-a-Center, the electric company, the gas company, the dentist, doctor, and Leroy's Used Car Lot.
How about the dean reading the names just wait until the noise dies down?

Been there done that. And that’s great. If you’re in the mood for a four hour graduation ceremony.
Well, when I graduated three decades ago, they withheld the actual diploma until you returned your cap and gown. We were handed empty folders as we walked across the stage.
How did they come up with that amount?
Do they do that often these days?
Apparently so.

Several African American graduates at the University of Florida are speaking out after a white faculty member forcibly rushed them off stage at one of the school's commencement ceremonies on Saturday. The students said they were observing a long-held tradition among black fraternities and "strolling" after getting their college degrees when the usher grabbed them and roughly shoved them along.
University of Florida President W. Kent Fuchs apologized after videos of the incidents went viral online.

Pillory them on the public square, where passers-by may pelt them with rocks and garbage.
Maybe they added the amount of teachers and the amount of families they know are already loud and obnoxious.. and figured that would be how much they wanted for their next raise.
Be sure and bring an air horn and set off some fireworks too!
I was at a graduation last year. A group of people would cheer, yell, blow plastic trumpets, compressed air horns, and throw confetti and glitter for several minutes whenever one of their group walked on stage. It was very disruptive.
Now in this scheme, the family of the kid walking has to pay, right? So that policy will end quickly when the group I mentioned above goes bonkers with noise whenever someone NOT of their group walks.
I misunderstood, apparently the family members who do the yelling get fined.
My Nephew’s class had almost 700 kids in it. They did it in alphabetical order. His last name is ‘Brewer,’ so when he got his diploma we left. My sister and her husband had to wait until the end. He’s their son. If every one of those kids were given 15 seconds to dance and have their family and friends cheer it would take Two hours and 55 minutes
Hysteria is not part of the ceremony and has come from the black community which believes acting a fool shows respect.
Misplaced set of “values.” I guarantee you that no fine would be imposed if someone yelled out “allahu akhbar” or “binary sucks.”
