Googles virtual assistant can now make phone calls on your behalf to schedule appointments, make reservations in restaurants and get holiday hours.
The robotic assistant uses a very natural speech pattern that includes hesitations and affirmations such as er and mmm-hmm so that it is extremely difficult to distinguish from an actual human phone call.
The unsettling feature, which will be available to the public later this year, is enabled by a technology called Google Duplex, which can carry out real world tasks on the phone, without the other person realising they are talking to a machine. The assistant refers to the persons calendar to find a suitable time slot and then notifies the user when an appointment is scheduled.

I heard the tape. .it sounds like a human
CG Videos will also soon be indistinguishable from reality. Any scenario with anyone you can dream of will be created by a computer.
It will completely destroy people’s trust in media and make video inadmissible in court.
I guess it would pass the Turing test.
The ability to completely imitate your voice after just a few minutes of speech has been around for years. Its not a great leap to plugging that modification in. There is no technical way to distinguish human speech from these programs. How fun!
That explains the call to customer service.

Just program it to hate Conservatives and honest government.
A great tool for railroading too.
So that’s why the telemarketing call center over on the poor side of town is now closed and boarded-up.
Just a little while ago I got a robocall from one of those devices.
I get those crappy taped-but-real-sounding robocalls all the time on my cell (we seldom pick up the house phone). I start talking, they keep talking. Interactive my @$$.
So does it inform you that the conversation is being recorded? This would be illegal in most states if it does not.
Gonna be a new Golden Age for the phone sex industry...
