Peter, Paul and Mary
https://genius.com/3085705

A popular song in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, the song raises the issues of segregation, racism, sexism and labor rights.

Pete Seeger and Lee Hays wrote the song in 1949, and performed it for the first time at at St. Nicholas Arena in New York at a testimonial dinner for the leaders of the Communist Party of the United States.

The Peter, Paul and Mary version was released in 1962 and became a top ten hit on the Billboard charts, during the folk music heydays.

Pete Seegar said it was originally written “If I Had a Hammer and a Sickle” but we decided that you can only use the word “pickle” so many times in a song...

A great song. I’ve always been a strong fan of Peter, Paul and Mary’s music. It might have been written for liberal purposes, but it was just as much fun to sing as a conservative, too. And I CERTAINLY prefer their music to the rap that’s the current style.

I separate an artist’s work from the artist. We’d lose a lot of great art, as well as music, if we judged a work by the character of the creators.
