Millennials are waiting longer to have sex, with one in eight still virgins at 26 years old, new research has found.
The sharp rise in the number of young people waiting longer to have sex may be because of a "fear of intimacy" and the pressure of social media, according to analysts.
The Next Steps project, the brainchild of the Department for Education which is now managed by University College London, has tracked 16,000 people born in 1989-90 since they were 14.
The interviews, conducted in 2016, discovered a rise in the number of Millenials waiting longer to have sex compared to previous generations, where one in 20 reported still being virgins at around the same age.
Susanna Abse, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist at the Balint Consultancy, told the Sunday Times: "Millenials have been brought up in a culture of hypersexuality which has bred a fear of intimacy.

I’ve thought this to be the case based on my assessment of, seemingly, a lot of teenage girls since, say 2000. Something about them put me in mind of girls who wanted NOTHING to do with getting on the sex train. I had the feeling that they saw no upside for themselves. I put it down to intelligence.
The thought would probably not occur to Ms. Abse, but perhaps the pendulum is starting to swing back. At least some young women are figuring out that spending their youth as promiscuous boy toys, practicing infidelity, learning that all relationships end as failures and collecting STDs is not the path to long term happiness. All they have to do is open their eyes, look at all the wreckage around them, and think for themselves. The culture conspires against them, but some of them will figure it out. So will some of the young men, but the women historically have always set the limits.
Coming to understand the merits of traditional Judeo-Christian sexual ethics should not be dismissed as a "fear of intimacy," although that is how pagans have usually dismissed it.

Good point. These are confusing times.
It's trickier than that. These young women know the clock is ticking. Young and hot are diminishing assets. They start getting desperate once they approach the downslope. They then quickly realize that the good guys in the appropriate age range are mostly gone. Unmarried men at a similar age can still play the field, but the women have slim pickins,' getting slimmer by the year. They end up settling for the men they deserve, and that's often a cruel fate. Karma comes back to bite.
