The true issue is: for the sake of his Arizona constituency (since he has now admitted he will not return to D.C.) - why doesn't McCain resign? Think logically

He has to wait until some date in May or they have to call a special election. By waiting the appointee can just fill out his term !

A guess plus I think I read it here a while back:

I think there's a cutoff date after which the Governor appoints a replacement but before there has to be a special election. If that's accurate, they are playing Weekend at Bernie's with the old Hobbit's corpse until they can wheel and deal his gross wife into the slot.

Actually, if he lasts til June, it’s better for the GOP. No election til 2020. McCain’s last FU would be to give up the ghost on May 30.
