And I can understand your not wanting the fact that his statements were popular vote-getters in the North to be brought up today.

Your word "paternalism" correctly describes the loudly self-professed attitude of slaveholders for their slaves.
It would not accurately describe Lincoln's support for restricting slavery's expansion before the Civil War or for emancipation during it.

Lincoln was ahead of his time, but still a man of his times, otherwise he'd not be elected to anything ever.
