Did the Flatheads speak French before the French people came?

Of course not. But the time that's been referenced the French had already been there so the point is moot. When english speaking Americans showed up they had been speaking French for awhile. So the 'in historia tempus', the Plains Indians knew French. Even to Lewis and Clark era.

Did they even call themselves Flatheads?

Who knows, other Indians probably did.
