There are many Krag carbines out there that are called NRA Krag carbines which were the cut down rifles. I have two NRA Krags and one true Krag carbine. I used all three on horseback after I added the saddlebar ring to the NRA carbines. IMO the Krag bolt is the smoothest of any of the bolt action rifles, ancient or modern. Another caveat for the Krag is that those made before 1898 do not require any paperwork or license to purchase as they predate the Federal regulations. Krag 30-40 ammo is sometimes hard to find.

Read years ago that the Krag was the most finely machined & smoothest bolt action there ever was. That it had only a single locking lug contributed to that smoothness & rapidity of cycling.
