Churchill said, “Nations don’t have friends, nations have common interests.” Saudi Arabia is not an ally. We do, however, have common interests. Those interests give the US the advantage in the area when it comes to dealing with Iran.

People may wonder why the US supports any of the recent Saudi governments (as represented by their kings.) It’s because a Saudi Arabia that is run by somebody else has the potential to be orders of magnitude worse than Iran. The current leader is the first Saudi King to attempt to change the direction Saudi Arabia has been going. If he succeeds, Saudi Arabia may become a much more agreeable partner in the world’s various games. If he fails and is replaced by a hardliner, then not only will Saudi Arabia devolve into a worse Hell, it will take much of the Middle East with it.

Tehran? More likely their new BFF Israel is the one backing any coup attempt if that's what this really is. With the Saudis, you can never really rule out tribal BS flaring up over some slight or another made toward one of the factions by the royals.

Gunfire and explosions have been reported outside the home of the Saudi king in Riyadh, the country’s capital. Sources on Twitter have posted photos and videos of the situation and have said that the gunfire is part of a coup attempt. The king has reportedly been evacuated.

The Jerusalem Post has not been able to independently verify these claims.

This is a developing story.
