VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was stabbed in the neck while holding his young daughter on his lap while dining at a restaurant on the Ventura Promenade.
Ventura police received multiple calls around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday about a stabbing at the Aloha Steakhouse at 364 S. California St.
Police said the victim and his wife were having dinner along with their 5-year-old daughter at the time of the attack, which appeared to be unprovoked.
Investigators said there was no altercation or contact prior to the attack, and the victim and suspect did not appear to know each other.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a group of good Samaritans standing along the Ventura Promenade who had chased the suspect from the crime scene onto the beach, investigators said.
Officers tracked down the suspect and ordered him to the ground. He complied and was detained on suspicion of attempted homicide.
Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Jamal Jackson, describing him as a local vagrant.
While Jackson was being taken into custody, other responding officers found the victim at the crime scene, suffering from a life-threatening stab wound to the neck. The officers rendered first aid to the man until medical responders arrived on scene.
The victim was transported to a local hospital to be taken immediately into surgery. Following surgery, the victim was listed to be in critical condition.
The manager of the Ventura restaurant said the victim's family called to thank them and the good Samaritans who took action during the stabbing.
A motive in the stabbing was not immediately known, police said.
I get it. Everyone must think like you or you will be mean to them.
Perhaps we should concern ourselves more about how a troubled man, known to be a problem went into a restaurant and murdered a man. His daughter no longer has a father to eat with, at any time of day on any day. A little more important than the time of dinner.
I will keep that little girl in my prayers, pray that she survive this tragedy and is able to be the strong young woman she is meant to be.
There are many differences between us. And, I do not care to discuss any with you.

Oh I have not been mean at all. But you are way out of line and needed to have that conveyed to you. A man is dead. By violent means. In front of his family. In front of his five year old daughter. Who was sitting in his lap. Sitting in his lap while he bled. Probably she got blood on her. Neck wounds are bloody. But G-d and His angels forbid she be out after the AAP and your personal bedtime chart.
Now for all we know the child does get the suggested hours of sleep a day. Doctors probably base bed time recommendations (these don’t have the force of law or regulation behind them) on a typical schedule for a five year old in today’s society. Usually that means school starting at 8 or 9 in the morning.
But that really does not matter. Because it will be a damn long time before this child ever gets the sleep she needs again. She will miss her daddy every moment. That grief never fully goes away. It is damn scary and it scars. It is a wound that draws a different kind of blood. Your soul’s blood. Try to get that.
A sick evil person brought this child’s world crashing down and you conjecture some wrong doing on the part of the victim. Even to suggest it was some sort of set up. To have that in the forefront of your mind is inconceivable to me. So consider yourself lucky that I have not been mean. I am done here. I hope you say a prayer for that man’s family.

I did too as a kid in the nostalgic 50s and 60s
My dad would lay out his jacket and I’d sleep by the table before carry car seats were in vogue

To be honest a wild cat kid is easier when they’re sleepy.....I lived in Miami with our daughters....a late night town if ever there was one...we’d eat with kids a lot later than 9 on weekends

Thank you. Usually I am fairly strict about children having a routine and a set bedtime. But gosh one can be flexible. Not every family has the same routine. And as you pointed out a sleepy child can pretty much bunk out anywhere.
When did you live in Miami? My husband is a Florida native and his mom grew up in WPB.

I have written and erased about a dozen posts to this arrogant, judgmental, intentionally obnoxious person. I’ve erased them before posting because I truly enjoy being a part of FR (and I knew my comments would get me banned) despite the fact that said person deems herself “allowed to be more conservative than” others here. I’ve seen a lot of arrogant people come and go but never such callousness to the death of someone being relegated to the back burner because a child was out to dinner with of her parents at the “donna unapproved” hour of 9:20 PM.

What a truly judgemental, pompous ass you are. A father & husband is brutally murdered in front of his daughter & wife and the thing that upsets you the most is that the child wasn’t home in bed. You are one truly demented person!!! I truly don’t give a damn about your “feelings” at this point. You’ve proven over & over Just how shallow you are.
