What the late Lionel Trilling used to call the liberal imagination was captured by the plight of two black men who went to a Philadelphia Starbucks and didn't order anything. 8,000 Starbucks stores closed yesterday for sensitivity training and the conscience of an anguished world pulsated with guilt and grief over the arrest of the two men, whose only offense was to stand there.
The two men were exactly right: The right thing to do in Starbucks is not to order anything, because the coffee is disgusting. Starbucks' response, to be sure, was incommensurate with the problem: Rather than subject their employees to the ritual farce of sensitivity training, the company should spend money on high-quality coffee beans, and roast them lightly rather than burn them into acidic volcanic ash. The best coffee (namely Italian espresso) is not bitter, but bittersweet, like dark chocolate. High-quality Italian coffee (for example Illy or Lavazza) is widely available in American supermarkets, and the persistence of Starbucks in the face of higher-quality competition is a testimony to the poverty of the American palate.

BTTT
The few times I’ve been forced to go to Starbucks, I always make it a point to order a Medium BLACK coffee.
I keep hoping for a lecture that Black coffee is racist and they use some stupid special word instead of medium.
Unfortunately, I apparently am aligned with those who don’t order stuff at Starbucks, since I never go (and never would go) there.
Mostly agree about the taste of Starbuck’s coffee, but this jackwad is 180 degrees out of phase with me on craft beer.
Two white guys need to go into a Starbucks and wait for a friend. If they are kicked out sue.
What?
You think there is a fair standard in America? There isn’t.
I don’t care who you are, that’s funny!

Get a thermos jug, fill one half with with strong, rancid coffee, one quarter with sugar and the remaining quarter with M&Ms and some mints, mix it all together - you’ve got the Starbucks experience!
Starbucks pushes their barely-roasted “blonde” brews in no uncertain terms.
Their medium roasts aren’t “burned”, more “normalized” so they can provide uniform taste on enormous scale. Pike Place is their house blend, and understandably avoided.
You have to go deep into the “dark” roasts before reaching “burned”. The regular localized dark roasts are fine (not great). French Roast is quite firmly there; as an avowed coffee snob I gave that a chance last week, and dubbed it the worst cup of coffee I’ve ever had.
Point: Starbucks has a full spectrum of roasts, from hardly roasted to half charcoal, with plenty of selections in between.
For those who can't do that, here it is...
The real victims of Starbucks are not the two black men who were arrested for standing around without ordering anything, but the customers who actually ordered Starbucks coffee. Who will speak up for them? The best way to respond to this outrage is to stop into whatever Starbucks outlet you happen to pass, and when asked what you want, say in a loud voice, "I don't want anything! This coffee sucks!" See if they call the cops.
It gets better. For the laugh of the day, read the entire short article.
Well, that’s probably true. Did you see that video some guys did where first a white guy broke into his own car and the recorded it. People walked by, smiled, some even offered to help! Then the black guy broke into the car while the white guy recorded. He was face down on the concrete with a boot in his back in no time flat.
I thought the closure for training was happening in May.
It would be a hoot if all of America suddenly woke up to the fact that Starbucks is overpriced, horrible coffee.
not only did these two guys sit around for 15 minutes without buying anything, they then asked for the bathroom key. Like a lot of stores, the restrooms are for paying customers. When they were informed of this, they refused to purchase a pack of gum or anything else that would make them “paying customers”. They became rude instead. When the cops arrived, they could have just left without incident, instead they refused to leave, buy anything, and argued with the cops for 7 minutes. Like most negative interactions blacks have, they brought it upon themselves.
I suggest we all, even those of us who have never gone to a Starbucks, troop on down and just sit in their establishment, use their Wi-Fi, be rude to their staff, and then demand to use the restrooms. If you’re white, you’ll soon learn that they won’t tolerate such boorish behavior, but if you’re black, their new training will require to them apologize to you for even expecting you to act like a grown up, instead of an over-grown whiny baby.
charbucks got big through selling that burnt Drench Roast. Yuppies thought themselves O So Chic sipping that swill.
They won’t change now.
Starbucks IS NOT the only business in America to deny non customers the use of their restrooms? Almost every convenience store/gas station, bar, barber/beauty shop plus you name it small business has the same business policy.
No, I am no fan of Starbucks, and; I have only used Starbucks in Vegas when it was the only place in the hotel/casino to get Columbian coffee in the AM.
Go into a neighborhood bar and sit down, order nothing, and head towards their restroom.
I wont buy that overpriced yuppie crap but at least I have the decency to stay out of their stores and not use their facilities, making room for the fools who do.
Yup. Any business that has a “WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE” sign/poster may as well toss them on the trash pile.
I’m planning on going there with my laptop and just sitting, writing...and waiting for them to ask me to leave...then pulling the “I’m a FEMALE!” line.....you’re SEXIST!
