That revolution was stirred up by CIA/DS during the Carter Admin. to topple the Shah. Had to do with Shah and Oil leases. Newspapers helped beat the drums. (They have admitted their exaggerations).
Carter didn’t listen when he was warned about Ayatollah. Of course, the Shah was brought in same way - IIRC, a dispute with British Petroleum so our special partner was assisted and the Shah went along with what they wanted.
A shame - those people were a pretty modern before the Ayatollah, and not so extreme.
