We got a notice from SS that someone had tried to use DH’s SS# for employment and was caught. Our tax account was not affected.
We contacted the credit score companies.
Then we bought a double membership in Lifelock. They keep an eye on anyone trying to use your identity for a loan or to apply for credit. If identity is stolen, they work to fix credit history. They pay attorney fees. They reimburse ups to $1M (top tier plan; we only could afford the $100k level).
They are a watchdog on identity and credit use and actually pledge, by contract, to repair, to undo bad actions, to reimburse losses and to pay legal costs.
Like most people, our good credit is important. We own a valuable property free and clear and it is for sale, so it is in the public eye. It hurt financially to put out nearly $400 for a year for both of us, but it is insurance. Identity and transaction insurance. All they track are accounts, credit cards,insurance policies that you give them.
