We know that Pope St Pius X was definitely not. Probably not any of the others, either, until John XXIII. I remember reading speculation that there was another Pope who was voted on after Pius XII died, who was intimidated not to accept the Papacy, and that was when John XXIII got in. He then called the Vatican II Council and it’s been downhill ever since.

That’s right! I was little then, and only remember Paul presiding over Vat II. I had thought he had originated it, but you are correct. John started it. I am wondering if John’s blueprint was a bit different from what Paul put together regarding the modernization process. I somehow suspect so.
