A family of four from Creston, Iowa, has been found dead in a condo in Mexico, Creston police reported Friday. Kevin, Amy, Sterling and Adrianna Sharp failed to return home Wednesday, according to a Creston police spokeswoman. They had left for Tulum, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula earlier this month.

Immediate family members came to the Creston Police Department early Friday morning to report the family missing, police said. Missing-persons reports were entered into a nationwide database, and officers contacted the U.S. State Department.

Officials in Mexico were contacted, and officers who checked the condo where the family was staying found the bodies of Kevin Sharp, 41; his wife, Amy Marie Sharp, 38; and their children, Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7. Autopsies are being performed in Mexico, Creston police said.

Mark Williams, chief dispatcher for the Union County (Iowa) Law Enforcement Center, said Friday that Mexican officials were speculating that the family had been killed by a gas leak in the condo.

Family member Ashli Peterson had posted on Facebook on Thursday night that the Sharps left for Tulum on March 15.

Peterson wrote that there had been no contact from the family members since March 15, when they told relatives that they were in Mexico.

"We are extremely worried and hope they are found soon or can contact their family," Peterson wrote.

Friday, she updated her post, writing, "The Sharps have been located. They were found last night in their condo deceased. There was no foul play! At this time that is all the information we have.

"Please respect the family at this time as they go through the grieving process. Thank you for all the posts, shares, and kind words."

Creston is about 100 miles east-southeast of Omaha.

Such sad news, beautiful family. If the cartels don’t get you, it’s the gas or food poisoning.

Northstar - You felt safer there? Yes and no. I have traveled in Yucatan enough to know - it is still Mexico. Mexico is run by the cartels. There were murders on the beach in Cabo a couple of months ago, where my sister had vacationed with/ in a friend’s condo not two weeks before. The tropics are quite beautiful, but you always, always have to be wary.
