NEW YORK (AP) Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.
Were definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name, said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.
The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names havent overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.
Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.
We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter, said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didnt want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows shell be accepted by us no matter what. Riley is 3.

I heard that the popularity of Hillary as a girls name, has dropped and stayed way down, ever since the Clintons came on the national scene in ‘92.
I don’t know if there are more baby Baracks out there since the Obamas came along.............
Guess they’re admitting though that it takes a male and female to make a baby (the natural way, anyway).
...a sure way little Royal gets his ass beat in HS.
Well, let’s see. There’s Pat. And Robin..
Expect a gender bender kid and what do you know—you just might get one.
Most kids want to give their parents what they expect.
Lord help us!
How about X,Y,Z, or would that be too specific?
And Chris and Fran and Jacky.
.
These gender neutral names are mostly male names. Jordan, Devan, Riley, Sidney....yuck.
Yes, there have always been some names, such as Robin and Pat, which were used by either sex.
This article sounds like a liberal dream, as they talk to liberal sounding parents, who want to be trendy on this gender business. They want to make sure they name their babies in a way which won’t interfere with their future sex change operations. Sheesh, is that really a prominent factor in people deciding what to name their babies??? Outside the liberal yuppie fringe on the upper west side???
Kids are going to be so screwed up by this culture the suicide rate will be 30%. Can’t remember who said it and don’t have time to look it up, but it goes like this:
“If you can make them believe absurdities, you can make them commit atrocities.”
I predict this young generation will face a bloodbath that will make WWII look like a walk in the park on a spring day. They are routinely falling for absurdities.
Does anyone else sometimes just NOT GIVE A #### anymore?
I’ll be 50 in 2 months. Relatively young but for me it’s a miracle i’m seeing it.
Living to 90 would be great if I stayed healthy.
But this is the pit stop on the way to the REAL reason we are born.
So if a large amount of people want to destroy the world and end up in hell, so be it.
At some point, one has to remember this rock is only a temporary resting place. A testing grounds too, if you will.
One must be of this world but not in it in today’s day and age.
We are OF this world but IN God’s hands.
I’d name my kid Chauncey Fahrquar before I’d name it “Royal.”
Notice I called it “it” to go along with the sick parent’s gag.
It and Thing ?
