NEW YORK (AP) Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.
Were definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name, said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.
The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names havent overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.
Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.
We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter, said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didnt want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows shell be accepted by us no matter what. Riley is 3.

How about Morgan? Does anyone name boys that anymore?
Or cousin Cackle or cousin Shriek?
Ashley, like Lindsey and Leslie, used to be a boy name. Trends change.
We unintentionally gave half our kids unisex names. The boys names were in only the boy side of the baby name book. I had never heard of them used for girls until after we picked the names. Sigh-I was apparently living under a rock during my child bearing years. Our seventeen year old says hes only bothered by it because its a great name and now he cant use it for his future daughter. Funny guy...
Our daughters name can be used for either depending on the spelling. Of course, shortly after she was born I saw a teen boy in Ireland interviewed on the news. His name was spelled in what I thought was the feminine way.
I give up.
We said, “Slippery Slope”, due to Homosexual radicalism and we were crucified. We are going to keep on sliding and it will get uglier.
“My name is Sue, how do you do?”
The boy named Sue knew who he was and what he was. That is why he was forever in a fight.
These snowflakes these days would wear the name with pride and try to figure out if it was gender selection. Then they would have a mental meltdown ten years down the road because something didn’t feel right. These kids today do not give me a warm fuzzy feeling.
No offense meant, it was derived from
an ol joke:)
When I was born, someone calling to congratulate my mother asked what did she name me. Oh, the friend said to my mother, you had a little boy!
My middle name is just as gender-neutral.
There are practical problems with gender-neutral names. If you are trying to write a formal letter or email, and you are looking at the first name to try to determine how to address the person, the first name might not be any help. In a formal communication, it is improper to address people by first names, but it is rude to call them by the wrong gender title. So, what do you do? These parents may be deluding themselves about being open minded and not pigeonholing their children into being their biological gender (as if they have a choice), but they are just causing their kids all kinds of annoyance later on.
I know a guy named Ashley.
Lib parents will determine the gender for the child.
A boy named Sue.
So what did you name your baby?
Blob
You named your baby Bob?
No, Blob...
Free love, AIDS, single mothers, absent fathers, open marriage isn’t just for the EBT crowd anymore.
These aren’t gender neutral, they’re names traditionally used for males that are now given to females, or simply surnames used as first names.
Many masculine names have become feminine names: Ashleigh, Robin etc
Like Heshe. That is the oldest one.
Why not go full phrase on names like: “Not on my ship, Mister” or “Everybody in the Pool”? That way, the child can be a conversation piece.
The US elected a girly man for prez twice who’s mama’s name was Stanley.
Hi Tom!
Shalom and just in case I forget, Chag kasher v’same’ach!
I think Taylor Swift has also made the name ‘Taylor’ synonymous with smart, intelligent, creative, and feminine women!
(-:
Hugs, Megan
Wednesday has been a traditional girl’s name ever since the advent of the children’s poem that says, “Wednesday’s child is full of grace”.
Grace being a traditionally feminine attribute.
(That I really wish I had!)
Wishful thinking on the libs part.
People just like to be different and using weird names is one way of doing it.
Soon enough, traditional names will be the *weird* ones and people will be naming their kids traditional names just to be different.
