What’s in a name: Gender-neutral baby names are on the rise

NEW YORK (AP) — Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.

“We’re definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name,” said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. “This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.”

The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names haven’t overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.

Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.

“We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter,” said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. “We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn’t want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows she’ll be accepted by us no matter what.” Riley is 3.

Conservatives should counter this trend by giving their daughters names like Daisy, Rose, Ashley, and Grace.

Indeed. Remember, Barack Obama's mother's name was Stanley.

Wasn't Riley the girl from Pixar's Inside Out. ?

The best option is the Polish one - if a name ends in “a” it is female (it’s the same with nouns since Polish has masculine, feminine and neuter nouns) - if it ends in a consonant it is male. So Tomasz, Dominik, Artur are male as as the words pies, kot, budynek and Weronika, Ania, Anna are female as as the nouns krowa, herbata, kawa

B'karov etzlech Megan dear!

I think Taylor Swift has also made the name ‘Taylor’ synonymous with smart, intelligent, creative, and feminine women!

All that and more :)

HUGS!

Taylor Caldwell also comes to mind. Think of her as Ann Coulter’s grandmother.

OMG. My oldest is 26 and when he was in preschool all the girls were named Harley and Ryder and McKay and such. This is not new. In fact, if you hear of a Sydney, it’s a girl. A Luca is a boy. This is old.

There are a lot of us Swifties here. I listen to Rep every single day. And I’m so close to actually paying the big 2nd hand $ to go see her finally.

The funny thing is, in the preschool world, if I heard a kid was called Riley, I’d know it was a girl these days.

Be sitting down when you look at StubHub.

Then I think, do I just want to be there, even if I can’t see much (except for the screen)? Or do I really want decent seats (not floor, you see better a little up) and really get the most out of it, and not have any spending money fo a month or so?

Here it will be at the Rose Bowl which is YUGE. And probably kind of chilly at night in May.

So what's the most outrageous AA name you've ever come across? And BTW, did you get a new kitten? You have to check out the KitKat Playroom, featuring NINE 4-5 week old baby kittens, all colors. So adorable!

I went to HS in the 70s with a guy named Beverly. Drop dead gorgeous, nobody gave him grief, super popular.

I’m looking at Indianapolis in Sep. Still seats as low as $46.50 (upper level). Thinking about 2nd level with a straight view into the stage for $119.00.

You won't regret it, I am going in September when Tay comes to KC.

Her 1989 concert was the best I have ever been too, was in the pit. I had the time of my life.
