The first full-length trailer for Netflixs Lost in Space is here.

The new footage includes a first look at the planet where the Robinson family finds themselves stranded, our first look at Dr. Smith (Parker Posey), plenty of intense action, and several scenes revealing the shows entirely reimagined Robot (which now is of a mysterious extraterrestrial origin).
This is a true family adventure in the vein of the original Jurassic Park, says showrunner Zack Estrin (Prison Break) in an exclusive interview with EW. I dont think theres ever been another show like this on TV that has this size and scope, but also this emotion. There arent a lot of family shows that everybody can watch for themselves. There are very few things that are not reality shows that adults and kids can enjoy together. Ive shown this to my father, whos 70, and my daughters, who are 11 and 14, and they all fell in love with it for different reasons.
The set-up: The Robinsons led by stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Molly Parker (Deadwood) is one of hundreds of families chosen for a colonization mission that goes horribly wrong when their ship is struck by an unknown calamity. The Robinsons escape to an unknown Earth-type planet and struggle to survive, and soon discover they are not alone. The show is based on the original 1963 series that ran for three seasons, yet has been updated in several intriguing ways.
Fans of the original show should know we maintain the core of what was special about that experience of watching that as a child that heres this incredible family thats off on this amazing adventure, said Estrin, who spent nearly two years bringing the updated series, which was previously revived as a 1998 movie starring William Hurt and Matt LeBlanc, to air. For new fans of the show, theres a certain baggage associated with the title Oh, thats that campy show from the 60s, or, Thats that movie from the 90s that was what it was. We are taking that core of an idea the Robinson family is striving to hold together and survive in this incredible circumstance and as much as this show is Lost in Space, it could be a shipwreck on an island. It just happens to be in space and we think its going to have a broad appeal beyond genre fans.
One of the biggest differences from the original series youll notice in the trailer is the radical redesign of The Robot that aided the Robinson family in the original series. This Robot is potentially lethal, with its own backstory and rendered with a combination of CGI and practical effects. The Robot was one of the hardest pieces of casting to do in the show because its such an iconic thing and something you can really get wrong, Estrin said. And its a different experience watching the show versus the trailer. You fall in love with this character. Its less about how it looks than who it is.
One holdover from the original design is the use of lights in the Robots face to suggest how its feeling (also, that its just simply called Robot). Whereas the original Robot was exactly what you thought it was, our Robot is a bit of a mystery that unfolds over the course of the season, Estrin said.
Another major shift is the gender-twist casting of Posey as one of the planets non-Robinson characters, Dr. Smith, who comes across just as shady as the original (if not moreso). The original Dr. Smith played by Jonathan Harris was so iconic, you couldnt just try to do that again, and if you were to ask a male actor to fill those shoes, there would always be a comparison, Estrin said. Were so lucky to have Parker, she brings such dimensionality to the role. She has a perfect mix of delicious villainy that lends a special piece of fun to the show. The character will also fill some of the big plot holes in the original series, like: Why is Dr. Smith there? Why do the Robinsons keep him (now her) around?
Yet one element from the original series the team sought to utilize as much as possible was the shows soundtrack, which was composed by a young John Williams (back when he was known as Johnny Williams), years before he became Hollywoods top composer of films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the aforementioned Jurassic Park. The new shows composer, Chris Leonard, took Williams themes for the show and put a contemporary spin on them.
Heres the official poster:

Somehow, I don’t remember Judy being black or Dr. Smith being a female or Major West being hispanic.
I guess we should feel lucky the Robot isn’t transgender... or maybe I’m presuming too much.
Diversity will be Lost In Space
Is Major Wests first name Kanye?

Oops!
I’ll keep an open mind. I’m just glad that Netflix isn’t insisting on token lgbt.
The leftard idiots at Netflix purposely put a white boy with the robot to TRAP viewers.
There’s only ONE Netflix series I’m waiting for and it’s Punisher Season 2, probably the most pro-gun series on TV. Highly recommended and it laughs at liberal gun control.
If race isn't made an issue in this reboot (and that remains to be seen, granted), I couldn't care less about the race of the actors.
Can I scream “cultural appropriation”? I’m a white male, and I feel like they are stealing an important part of my childhood by turning a title, plot, and characters I grew up with into something I don’t recognize. It should not be allowed. /sarc
Actually I have to laugh because a group of “diversity-oriented entertainers” can’t beat what old white men did 50 years ago, so they have to appropriate the content rather than produce good original ideas (which they must not have). Seems like those old white men who made the original should be proud, not offended that their ideas are being appropriated by lesser minds.
From the trailer, it looks like the expedition was originally supposed to involve a large number of colonists in a very large starship, composed of a bunch of modules, one per family. There is some sort of event damaging the starship, and the Robinsons’ module/landing-pod makes it out and lands on a nearby planet, where they are marooned.
This makes a bit more sense than being “lost” in space, while having a starship which manages to wind up at a new star system every week.
Similarities: Lost in Space & Gilligan’s Island
1. Gilligan’s Island & Lost in Space both ran for 3 seasons.
2. Both had 1 B&W season & 2 color seasons
3. Both were from the mid 1960’s
4. Both were on CBS
5. Both were about 7 stranded castaways.
6. Both had 4 male characters, 3 female characters.
7. Both had 1 married couple
8. Both had a character with the title “Professor”
9. Both had visits from other “Wanderers” potential rescuers that never panned out.
10. Both series ended without resolution.
11. Both series were cancelled even though their ratings were pretty good.
12. Both were critically panned but had a devoted fan-base.
13. Both appealed to children.
14. Both varied their opening themes/Visual openings.
15. Each had a character who constantly messed things up.
16. Both series had a pilot episode which wasn’t seen by the public until the 1990’s.
17. Both pilots had footage used in early episodes but needed to be matched carefully due to some different characters.
Some episode similarities:
1. Both had at least 3 stories (in which at least 3 main characters) had exact look-a likes.
2. Both had an episode in which a robot was found in thick brush each robot turned out to be functional.
3. Both had an appearance of then child actor Kurt Russel. (Also Struther Martin was in both)
4. Both had early (first 6 or 7) episodes which had to run in sequence to make sense.
5. Both had an episode with this very similar sequence:
A) Lost in Space with a wish machine. Dr Smith wishes for a complete Jupeter 2 so everyone may go back home - Although the wish is granted, it turns out that the new Jupiter 2 is less the two feet in diameter, and therefore useless as transportation.
B) Gilligan’s Island with the robot. The robot is instructed to build a complete boat so that everyone may go home - Although the robot builds the boat, it’s less then 2 feet long and therefore useless as transportation.
6) Both had an episode where two characters left, and wound up in an unknown location only to discover, they were in fact in a different part of the same location and thus, still stranded.

I can see a female Dr. Smith.
West should have beat up Zachary Smith at the end of every episode. A female antagonist should be able to get away with such.
Which one is a Trans?
With the progress the Japanese have made in hedonic robotics, perhaps you are.
Thanks for posting.
Very cool!
