Keith Richards won't miss Elton John 'at all' after singer's retirement

(WENN) -Keith Richards won't miss his rock rivalry with Elton John when the veteran singer retires from performing.

The British stars feuded for years, and have often exchanged insults in the press - with Elton, 70, once saying Keith, 74, looked like a "monkey with arthritis".

Although their relationship has thawed somewhat in recent years, The Rolling Stones rocker tells Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper that he won't miss the Rocket Man musician "at all" when he retires from live performances after a final three-year tour. He also thinks that Elton's departure from the live music scene means there's "more room" for his band.

Mocking his rival's dramatic announcement that he will play gigs all over the world before quitting to spend time with his family, Keith says, "After three years on the road with Elton, you would want to retire, too. I'll take his word for it." However, he did say of his longtime rival, "He's a lovable old dear. He's softening with age."

Elton's harshest words towards Keith came in 1997 after Keith criticised him for re-recording his 1973 tribute to Marilyn Monroe, Candle in the Wind, in memory of Princess Diana.

"I'm glad I've given up drugs and alcohol," he told the New York Daily News. "It would be awful to be like Keith Richards. He's pathetic, poor thing. It's like a monkey with arthritis, trying to go onstage and look young. I have great respect for the Stones but they would have been better if they had thrown Keith out 15 years ago...I just think he's an a**hole and I have for a long time."

I saw The Stones in concert last year in Buffalo, NY.

For three hours straight, not one person in the 80,000 seat stadium sat down.

Including me. And my nearly 60 year old ass doesn’t stand that long for anything.

Elton may be a fruit, but the albums he put out from 1970 - 1976 were great. He went downhill after he stopped writing with Bernie Taupin.

I hope when he retires Elton will still keep ripping on other celebrities. “Carnival stripper” is the best description I’ve ever heard of Madonna and “monkey with arthritis” is pretty apt for Keef, too. Keef was right about the song, though.

I’m sure there’s an arthritic monkey somewhere that was offended by that comment.

When I heard Elton's tribute song to Princess Di, all I could do was shake my head in disbelief. The least he could have done was create a new song rather than rely on one that was written by Bernie Taupin, as were many of Elton John's songs. Elton wrote the melodies......

Funny how fame and fortune work out, Elton John is now a knight and Bernie Taupin is just a guy who wrote songs for Elton......

“I have great respect for the Stones but they would have been better if they had thrown Keith out 15 years ago”

Nobody ever accused Elton John of having a lick of sense.

The above comment is a good illustration of why.

Without Mick, Keith or Charlie, there are no Stones.

Is Keith Richards saying that Elton John occupies the same music space as The Rolling Stones?

Yeah, you know, like when you get on an elevator and hear roadhouse jukebox music or when you go into a roadhouse and it's all elevator music. Same space.

Like or not-like the music,

Elton's fame is due to Taupin.

Richards' fame is due to Richards.

“I suppose the Stones will be touring another 20 years at this rate.”

They just announced another world tour, one that could last up to two years. And every seat, every venue will be sold out.

They will also be delivering a new album in 2018. Their last album won a Grammy in 2017 as the best traditional blues album.

Not bad for a bunch of old guys that were rumored to be over the hill 30 years ago. Since, every time they do a tour it grosses more than all other acts combined, and every album goes platinum.

They have some real talent.

He re-recorded it in 1997 in honor of princess Di. He even got Bernie Taupin to revise the lyrics. But it was very overproduced IMO.

When they warm up and shift into overdrive, there’s not another band in the world that even comes close.

Elton John is a talented musician, but on a different planet from Keith Richards, who is also a talented musician. They’ve both got their personal problems and deficiencies. I fear for Elton John’s “son,” being raised by such a militant unrepentant homosexual. They’re both a little too old for rock & roll now, but there’s no fool like an old fool. I’d expect a catty spat out of Elton John. It’s surprising from Keith Richards.
