I have to disagree. I don’t believe that ‘those people’ had any deeply-held beliefs at all, one way or the other.
Deeply Held Beliefs - combined with, as you say, all that money and physical effort - might have produced something that didn’t look so stupid, sloppy, disjointed and uninspired.
