Years after the former rodeo roper turned country singer lost his voice, LarryCallies stumbled into his past. Records from plantation days revealed connections between his slave ancestors and a white east Texas minister who had kids with slaves, uncovering hidden history became his passion.

Larry Callies owns history with a collection of boots, buckles, stirrups, photos and more on display at the Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg.

“I just don’t like to lose my heritage,” he said. “I don’t like to lose things that we used to have. I brought a lot of stuff from me just picking stuff up.”

“People think cowboys originated on TV,” Callies said. “They didn’t. They originated in the slaves. They had a house boy. They had a yard boy. They had somebody that worked the cows. He was called a cowboy. So the black cowboys were the first cowboys and they came from right here in Fort Bend County.”

Another funny one that would come in for a lot of criticism today.

I would think that the Mexicans were the source of cowboys, but not the only one.

It is ridiculous that people have no sense of humor to the point that everything critical of their sacred cows offends them-Imy 1st husband had a favorite T-shirt that said on the front “If you can’t take a joke” and the part you tucked in said “f*** you”-kind of sums it up...

Right you are. You can still have humor in this country, but it has to be their humor, approved and accepted to them. How I despise Leftists.

I congratulate Mr Callies for researching his family tree and the history of the Black American cowboy but cowboy tradition in the Americas owe their origins and traditions(ten galoen hats, rodeos, bullwhips, stirups, spurs, etc) to the Spanish and Portuguese since Columbus and other Western explorers brought their domesticated cattle. Not to African slaves and(most laughable, American TV)

Researching my own family history lead me to read about "Border Reivers" who raided the lands and cattle across the English and Scottish estates. (reminds me of the scenes from "Lonesome Dove")

This was around the 1322s and long before the blackAmerican cowboys.

And as long as there were domesticated cattle, there were cowboys or shepherds or whatever they were called watching over their masters livestock from cattle thieves or predators.

“People think cowboys originated on TV,” Callies said. “They didn’t. They originated in the slaves."

Correct but only partially correct.

The cowboys were a function of class and wealth. They had neither. Prior to the Civil-War they were white and Mexican unless one was a freed slave. There were black cowboys on the plantations but they were slaves and not free men. Post Civil War they were all three. They were just poor men trying to make a living. Bless them all and do not forget the Mexican Vaqueros. The Vaqueros were actually the original cowboys. Their skills came from Mexico before there was a United States and we learned and adopted their skills.

Our cowboys were brown, white and black. Cowboys have a noble heritage!

Blazing Saddles is a favorite-just imagine the howling if such hilarious-and un-PC-movies were produced today...

Circa 1978 I took my Norwegian lady to see Blazing Saddles. I laughed hilariously during the movie as did others. As she did not understand American History and humor she was confused by it.
