More than 200 birds fell from the sky onto a Draper street Monday, leading residents to wonder what caused this mass avian accident.
“It’s one of the rarest things I’ve ever heard of,” said Sergeant Chad Carpenter with the Draper City Police Department.
“As I was driving, these birds were just falling out of the sky,” said Draper resident, Lacey Brown as she was driving down the street on 300 East in Draper.
“They were all on the ground right around here and on the roadway,” Brown said, “They were just falling out of the sky like leaves,” she added.

As I thought. Fly in large flocks this time of year. Likely flew into a low oxygen layer.
Wasn’t Les. It was Arthur “Big Guy” Carlson on the Thanksgiving episode. Les was on scene telling people that the turkeys were mounting a counter attack.

Anyone here recall when flocks of blackbirds would darken the sky?
It was in winter; I was driving my SUV locally on some errand. It was quite cold, and there was snow on the ground, but it wasn't snowing at that moment. Suddenly, a little group of four birds swooped together, at right angles to my direction of travel, right in front of me; they were flying in very tight formation, and obviously playing "follow the leader."
Their path took them below my field of view, and I heard a thump. I immediately looked in my rear-view mirror, and saw four dead birds skittering and flopping on the road behind me.
There was absolutely no time to put on the brakes or swerve; the whole thing was over in no more than two seconds, from first glimpse of the formation, to impact, to seeing them spinning on the road through my mirror.
Crows are definitely smarter than Lefties!
Seventeen birds are still alive and were transferred to a local rehabilitation center, the hope is they will recover and be released back into the wild.

Thousands of bar tailed godwits travel nearly 8000 miles from Alaska to New Zealand at heights of up to 20000 feet. Why do we not have reports from mariners of vast floating islands of fried godwits?
By the millions, mallards migrate at hights up to 21000 feet but neither frozen nor hypoxic ducks rain down on our towns.
The common crane flies over the Himalayas at up to 33000 feet from North Africa to Northern Europe through busy air lanes yet we do not find thousands of soaked or organ shattered cranes crashing all over Europe.
If John Wheeler hadn’t been offed and dumped in a dumpster in 2010 and the investgation put on the back burner by DA Beau Biden, we might have answers by now.
