Can't believe after 150 posts no one suggested Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It was written in ~1954 by a Russian emigre. She understood all about Socialism because of where she came from, and she completely exposes its evils and the mindless people who support it. (Her villains! Her heroes probably don't exist, but you'll wish they did.)

Along the way the villains pass an Equalization of Opportunity bill and an Anti-Dog-Eat-Dog bill. This is amazing stuff for 1954, and today.

Don’t let your children read Atlas Shrugged, however. She extends her objectivist philosophy to personal relationships and thinks everyone should be selfish. This book ruined my life for 11 years.
