FULL TITLE: Parents sue school district after their severely bullied 13-year-old daughter hanged herself and left behind note 'apologizing for being ugly'
The parents of a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide in November after being bullied for two years are suing her school district over a wrongful death claim.
Rosalie Avila, 13, hanged herself inside her family's Yucaipa, California home on November 28 and was later declared brain dead before being taken off life support December 4.
Her parents, Freddie and Charlene Avila, allege that their eighth-grade daughter was relentlessly bullied at Mesa View Middle School by fellow classmates who taunted her by saying 'she had ugly teeth, that she was ugly, a whore, a slut, and had sexually transmitted diseases,' according to a news release, KTLA reported.
The teen's classmates allegedly circulated a video showing what an ugly girl looked like and what a pretty girl looked like and used a picture of Rosalie to portray the ugly girl,' the release stated.
'In her suicide note, she apologized to her parents for being ugly.'
Weeks after her tragic death, the alleged bullies still targeted her on social media, according to her parents. One recent post read, 'Rosie is still annoying me from the grave.'
Her parents were also subjected to cruel bullying comments and messages.
One person sent them a message with a meme that said 'hey mom,' next to a picture of Rosalie's face.

“In a perfect and just world, that’s exactly what should happen, but in reality, educators will go for the easiest solution, which is do nothing.”

Suspension (& perhaps prosecution) and/or sent to a “school for the bad apples” used to work just fine. Should still.
At any rate, removing the victims of thugs makes as much sense as pulling out the grass so the weeds can take over the lawn.
Doesnt matter, its bullying and they picked a target and found whatever weak spots that worked.
Even just camping outside for a few days will demonstrate how silly and pointless most interaction in a school setting really is.
My grandfather told me a story about a central Texas farm boy who was bullied in the 1920s. He had a weak eye and was on the constant receiving end of abuse. One day on the bus ride home, two boys got off the bus at his stop to beat up on him. He grabbed a wooden fence post, killed one and severely injured the other. The sheriff did not press charges. Everyone in the county knew those two deserved it.
True story!
“I got a problem with parents who allow a daughter to go through ‘two years’ of this bullying. The time to sue is when the school isn’t addressing the issue......and further get the police involved directly with the parents of the bullying”

Can’t argue with that part. As Barney Fife would say, “Nip it in the bud!”.
those kids should be banned from using the internet until theyre 21............................ They can used the one in their cell, most likely by the time they are 21 they will already have a rap sheet.
Yeah...I see what you mean...Happens way too often....
Environment is so important, even for Adults.
It is one of the basics of life to put yourself and your loved ones in an environment where they can thrive.
But most people just don’t get it.
And she wasnt ugly, but if everyone keeps pounding on you with it you start believing it.
She was cute.
The problem is that the bullies lie and will use what ever it takes to demean someone, true or not.
If not, they’ll make something up, like they did here.
The poor girl, going through puberty, with hormones going amok in her body, accepted this judgment as truth and could not handle it.
The parents have already raised $65,000 for funeral expenses....which likely also paid retaining an Attorney to file suite........There’s more to be had by taking this to the media as they’ve done.
How she looked isn’t relevant.....the fact the parents didn’t use other options available to stop this ‘before’ two years is what I question.....greatly.
“I do believe we have raised an entire generation of kids with absolutely zero fortitude and resiliency.”

Yup. It’s hardly a novel observation, but life is tough sometimes and you just have to deal with it.

Enjoy the outdoors, but was never much on camping. We’ve spend thousands of years to make it to nice, warm houses and I don’t wanna upset the flow of progress
:D
Agreed.
It's not like homeschooling is a secret that nobody has ever heard of the option for.
The parents, the school, the teachers, her peers...
There are many at fault in this...
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Yep...my kids a bully on their bus who was one bad actor....the parents got together and put the fear of God in this kid. They knew where he got off the bus and waited for him. Needless to say it stopped.

And this is why I say send ‘em to a reform school (or whatever they call them these days) and let ‘em get prepared for the con life.
Nope...Parents are responsible for the safety of their children....and ‘they’ can act to stop it successfully. This went on for ‘two years’....it never should have. So something is wrong about this story the parents are painting.

It’s better they learn sooner than later that they can’t go through life that way.
I had a coupla guys back in the day who thought I’d be a good target - I’m a peaceful sort and not very intimidating.
But when they found out I wasn’t going to play their game for very long, they gave up on the bully attempts.
I am wondering why the parents, who knew she was being “relentlessly bullied”, didn’t take matters into their own hands to get her either into a different school, or home-schooled.
