As a Steeler fan who just endured that game:
I only have one thing to say about the ending of that game:
As I understand the rule of a pass catch it is when a player 1. --- takes possession of the thrown ball , THEN 2. ---- makes what they call a football move. That is what determines a catch. 1 and 2.
(This rule I believe was first employed just a few years ago concerning a catch and a subsequent fumble. A catch was determined a catch if the receiver took control of the ball and then made a football move before he may fumble it when hit.) --- a pretty crappy rule no matter what.
Well .. our Steeler player definitely 1. -- caught that ball and had complete control over it, then 2. --- reached out (IN A FOOTBALL MOVE) never having been touched by the other team (not that that is at all relevant) .he reached over the goal line and as the ball was in his grasp the ball hit the ground slightly but the ball was still in his grasp.
That is a CERTAIN CATCH AND TOUCHDOWN because he took control of the ball then (reached over the goal linea football move) with the ball and kept control never having been touched by the opponent. Touchdown.
1.--- It was a completed pass THEN 2. --- he made a football move reaching into the end zone -- that term is in the rule book. He landed in the end zone keeping control of the ball AFTER THE CATCH AND THE FOOTBALL MOVE. (Even if he bobbled the ball slightly, he had made a catch AND made that required "football move" as he reached over the goal line. ) Total horsesh*t call.
If the NFL had any balls (that arent deflated), they would admit they made a HUGE MISTAKE for the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft.
Total BS
The Steelers outplayed those New England characters most of the night, except for that beastly tight end of theirs.
Well well see them later this year, and I dont care where that game will be played, we may have Antonio Brown back for the entire game then.
The Patriots are going down the next time, no matter where it is played. (jmo)
Don't you EFFIN KNOW WHAT A CATCH IS??????????????????/
I'm real sick of all the turds here who don't know what a CATCH looks like.
Eighty years of football and the punklies here think that new rules mean all.
BS
A catch is a catch.
I was way too harsh, lepton. I apologize.
May the Steelers only beat the Patriots by 10 in the layoffs.
“On the very first replay it was clear that his left hand came off the ball AND it moved around AND it hit the ground before he reestablished control”
Actually, the receiver had his fingers under the ball and there’s no concrete evidence that the ball ever touched the ground, the replay official simply took a guess, or just ruled it the way he wanted to rule it. Figured I would mention that since you insisted on evidence with Cooks.
Pats fan to the core, here, and yep, I think your Steelers were jobbed. Yes, I understand the letter of the law, but c’mon, that was a catch.
Dude. The ball was quite obviously on the ground. It was uncontrolled and it touched the ground. If it had not touched the ground before he regained control -or- he had retained control throughout the catch, it would have been a catch. And most people watching thought it was until the replay. I saw the replay a dozen times, in close-ups. There is no doubt the ball hit the ground while it was uncontrolled. Fingers under it were not enough to keep it off the ground. A hand might have been, but he didn't have his hand under it, just some finger tips. There is a reason you see these receivers doing acrobatics flipping over onto their backs and so forth. It isn't to improve their odds of suffering from CTE. It is so there is no question of whether or not the ball hit the ground. There are very specific rules, and whether you agree with them in detail or not, they are the same for everybody. There have been similar calls against the Patriots during this season and prior. If Jesse James had flipped over and protected the ball instead of lunging for the end zone, the game most likely would have turned out differently. Get over it.
Given that the point was that that the rule changes over the last several DECADES didn’t affect whether that was a catch, that’s being rather absurd and maybe ironic.
As for the wailing about the Patriots and Steelers - OK. My comments were not remotely about such. So you’ve confirmed you’re a partisan. Have a good day.
Merry Christmas (truly)
___________
Bless you.
They have to change that rule.
I guess we may be seeing you again in the near future.
:-)
The great sports writer Thomas Boswell from the Washington Post wrote an entire article about that blown call that killed the Steelers.
Here's the play. The guy who laterals the ball releases it on the 50 yard line and the guy who catches it is clearly nearly two yards over the 50 yard line when he catches it. The guy who lateraled was running so fast that it cause the ball to go forward to the guy who caught it. (stop the action and you will see it very clearly).
I noticed it at the time and was so pissed off. I think our coach had already used his "challenges" at the time. I could be wrong on that though.
Anyhow....... these Patriot/Steeler games are nearly always epics.
Be well.
An interesting side note to this: The Steeler’s coach, Mike Tomlin is a member of the NFL Rules Committee, and last time it came up for a vote, he cast a vote in support of the rule!
Members:
Rich McKay (chairman) president, Atlanta Falcons
John Mara owner, New York Giants
Stephen Jones owner, Dallas Cowboys
Mark Murphy president, Green Bay Packers
Ozzie Newsome general manager, Baltimore Ravens
Rick Smith general manager, Houston Texans
Marvin Lewis head coach, Cincinnati Bengals
Mike Tomlin head coach, Pittsburgh Steelers
Bruce Arians head coach, Arizona Cardinals
John Elway general manager, Denver Broncos
Sean Payton head coach, New Orleans Saints
LOL.
But seriously ....... something needs to be done.
Nevertheless..........
Let's make some snow angels in Buffalo!
I suspect Coach Tomlin thought it through the same way I have, and listening to an interview with Belichick, he has too.
I’ve been thinking about it (yes, some of us Pats fans do think!) and I have never liked the rule, but...you know, the more I think of it, the harder it is for me to conceive of something to take its place.
For the life of me, I simply cannot think of how to change it so it becomes easier without, at the same time, making it far, far more subjective.
And given the quality of the zebras, that is not a prospect I relish...
_______
START HERE:
When a receiver catches the ball (AS THE ANNOUNCERS ACTUALLY SAID IN REAL TIME) then the receiver controls the ball ..... then has a knee go down to the ground............... that is a catch NO MATTER WHAT HAPPEND AFTER THAT.
How is that for NOT SUBJECTIVE!!!????
Well, except for the all caps...what if someone has the knee down, and appears to catch it, but after some undetermined period of time it leaves their hands...is that now going to be a fumble?
