Bethany Lynn Stephens had been gone for about a day since she left to walk her dogs. So her father went out to look for her at the area she frequented.
There, authorities say, he found her two dogs, guarding what he first thought was an animal carcass.
Much to his horror, discovered that it was not, Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew told reporters at a news conference Friday.
Investigators in Goochland, Va., a rural community about 30 miles outside of Richmond, say the petite, 5-foot-1 young woman, who weighed a little more than 100 pounds, was mauled to death by her dogs, which had a combined weight of about twice hers, while out on a walk earlier this week. Her father found her Thursday evening in a wooded area that used to be a farm, about a half a mile from the main road...
The dogs clearly, at least in our estimation in a dark night, had something to do with this. It was an absolutely grisly mauling, Agnew told reporters. In my 40 years of law enforcement, Ive never seen anything quite like it. Hope Id never see anything like it again.
Officials from the countys animal control department and sheriffs office spent at least an hour trying to tranquilize the animals, Agnew said. Investigators also found bloody articles of clothing scattered in the area.

The pictures of the dogs sure look like pit bulls to me.
I read this on another thread and something doesn’t sound right. To start with, those aren’t pit bulls IMO. They look more like Catahoula Leopard Hounds to me. They can be vicious hog and bear dogs but I have never heard of one attacking and killing a person. I had two that were crossed with Rottweiler as hog/bear dogs. We had them as farm protection dogs. They never, ever made any aggressive moves at us but could kill a wild hog, especially working as a team. It makes me wonder if something else attacked her and the dogs attacked it. My dogs would have died protecting me.
BTW, I won’t have Pitts or German Shepard’s. If I thought those were Pitt’s I would say so but they just don’t look like Pitt’s to me.
Yep. Another day. Another pitbull mauling/killing. Damn sick of it and people making excuses. Evil animals.
Yeah.
No. No problem with well brought up pit bulls. Spew your pit bull venom.
And when two such dogs are together, they reinforce each others vicious impulses.
We had a female mut growing up who had a very friendly disposition. Only when he was with an agressive male would she become agressive herself.
In before the its the owner, not the dog apologists.
Looks like a brindle pit bull to me, but I admit that nearly any mix of pit bull can look like one...or act like one.
At some point, the repeated anecdotes become the trend.
It's the owner's fault for fostering psycho genetically whacked out animals. Those ferals should have been tied in a sack and thrown into the river at birth.
I had a husky-German shepherd that was wonderful around people. She would never hurt a human being, but if there was any dog whatsoever, she would lose her mind and try to kill the dog.
Hide the Muslim.
Hide the Bulldog.
Shhhh
One of two things probably happened. Either the two dogs started fighting and she got in the middle, or, she fell and uttered a scream or high pitched squeal. This most likely happens when a dog/dogs consider the human as an equal instead of their Master.
“described the dogs as very large brindle-colored pit bull dogs.
Never know about these dogs.
Didn’t read the article, did you.
On a related note. Video shows woman losing control of two pit bulls as they go into a killing frenzy while killing a cat:

It’s pack mentality. Alpha dog, Beta dog vs Wannabe female alpha human dog. That and there are still strains of dogs trained for war and have adapted a natural inclination to it.
Perhaps it starts off as rough play, then turns into a mauling. One thing to note: I think most dogs maulings include 2 dogs or more.
People sure do have a constant problem in getting pit bulls not so well trained. Maybe a special license should be required to own one.
Bull dog owners carrying a crocodile Dundee knife, she would be alive.
