13th dismembered foot found on British Columbia shore

A man walking his dog on a British Columbia beach this week made a grisly discovery: A foot in a shoe, along with part of a lower leg. Adding to the mystery is that it is the 13th foot to wash up on the Canadian province's coastline over the past decade.

"Our early analysis suggests these are human remains and we will do further investigation and testing ... in the coming weeks," said Andy Watson, a spokesman for the BC Coroners Service, about the Thursday discovery. The remains included a tibia and fibula.

The Coroners Service said all previous 12 feet were human. The service identified eight of them and determined they belonged to six individuals.

No foul play was involved in those cases, according to the Coroners Service, though it did not say how it arrived at that conclusion.

So what does all this mean? Most of those shoes look like running or some other kind of sports shoe.

This story keeps popping up - sorry, I mean "emerging" - oops, I mean they keep floating it...anyway, it's been around for years now. What they mean by "no indication of foul play" is that there isn't any known crime to attach it to - sorry - not that the remains actually indicate a "natural" death. They've been submerged in water for some time, forensics are a bit hard to come by. You can get tissue samples, but what do you match them against?

Still, it's a pretty weird thing to keep happening. It certainly isn't happening at every coastal town. I'm going to go out on a limb here - sorry - but to the best of my knowledge the good citizens of British Columbia aren't into human sacrifice, at least not so much. Well, hardly ever.

Ever since they went to the metric system people no longer have use for feet.

Hikers. My bet is they were all hikers.

A clue of sorts, but not much.

Maybe the killer is a local guide, or other person well known — and possibly well liked - on the many trails that much exist in the area.

There was a TV show on this-——but where I saw it escapes me-———about 2 years ago.

There was an episode of Bones some years ago. It was set in BC, at the U.S. border; which set up the Canadian forensic investigator working with the "Bones" character.

I was going to say there was an episode of ‘Six Feet Under’ about this. Probably not what you’re thinking about.

[”Our early analysis suggests these are human remains”]

That’s some brilliant and terrific forensic work. Here I was thinking Sasquatch or Yeti were investing in footwear.

Could be. But, most ‘hikers’ wear hiking boots. Running shoes don’t have much ankle support. The running shoes don’t keep dry like most decent hiking boots. Especially in the NW, running shoes would be a last pick. But, that also could mean they were inexperienced in such things and got into trouble.

These go back to the 1990’s. I recall seeing reports on the found feet as early as 1996 on U.S. shores of Puget Sound. Never solved that I know of.

As someone much more clever than me said on FR the last time this made the news, there is an obscure regulation that if they find one foot, it is a local issue, but if they find two they have to call in the FBI.

On the other hand, if they find three, it’s a job for the Yard.

Without the rest of the body, they are obviously assuming that these individuals willing removed their feet???
