Conservatives slam GOP proposal to automatically raise taxes
Associated Press via Sacramento Bee ^ | November 29th, 2017 | BY STEPHEN OHLEMACHER AND MARCY GORDON

WASHINGTON - Conservative groups and lawmakers are lining up against a proposal by Senate Republicans to impose automatic tax increases on millions of Americans — if their sweeping tax package doesn't grow the economy and raise tax revenues as much as projected.

The opposition comes as the tax package cleared a key procedural vote in the Senate on Wednesday. The Senate voted 52-48 to start debating the bill. Wednesday's vote potentially could pave the way for the Senate to pass the package later this week. The Senate could start voting on amendments Thursday evening.

Opposition to the tax "trigger" could doom a delicately negotiated proposal aimed at mollifying deficit hawks who worry that tax cuts for businesses and individuals could add trillions to the mounting national debt.

Tucking a potential tax increase into the tax cut bill isn't sitting well with conservatives.

"Automatic tax increases are a special level of insanity," said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. "I don't think it survives."

Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, called the proposal "a uniquely bad idea," especially if revenues fall short because of an unforeseen slowdown in the economy.

Raising taxes can be (short Mongolian throat singing solo) .. awkward for congress, and they are sensitive critters ...
so they figure they might as well just raise taxes automatically, as they did with their pay raises back in `89.

Squeeze more money out of us, give themselves more—and it’s all automatic.
What did they work in October? 9 days? But that’s OK. It’s all automatic.

But then the question, if it’s all automatic, when the government shuts down why don’t we think about firing them and putting IRC bots to work? Bots won’t try to raise their interns’ skirts over their heads.

There's nothing we can do, it's automatic.

If it passes the senate it has to be reconciled before it is voted on in the house

I hate the triggers, but it is more important that the bill be passed. Once it is and 4% growth becomes the norm, the steam will be taken out of the leftist envy train and future tax bills and budgets will be easier to pass.

Last I heard they are going to bypass the joint conference and have the House vote on whatever passes the Senate.

I think our FRiend Skypilot has a link on it...

Automatic spending cut trigger. Wow, I like the sound of that.

How do you get it passed in the House with an automatic tax hike built in?

I don’t think that’s possible.

Require an automatic vote on tax increases if economic triggers in the bill are met in the future. They would never vote for it.

How about an additional automatic trigger to lower taxes if the economy improves based on the same metrics?

“Require an automatic vote on tax increases if economic triggers in the bill are met in the future. They would never vote for it.”

Brilliant nuance.

Have they even said what the trigger would be? It will probably be something unattainable, like 10% GDP growth or something.

Let’s have a tax cut trigger when Corker and Flake leave.

They could just be a little more transparent and simply direct that every American to sign a half dozen blank checks made payable to the US Treasury and mail them to congress.

“Let’s do it a different way....Cut every department budget (Military excepted) automatically by 2%. That ought to do the same thing.”

I like that idea, but I would go with 10% and that is per year.

How about a trigger to shoot our entire federal tax system deader than dead. The whole kit and kaboodle should be scrapped, including the 16th Amendment, but since that isn’t going to happen, then kill the entire tax code and institute a simple flat tax.
