Where does it say it was a handgun?

Besides it was an off duty Police Officer who shot and killed the guy.

Even dedicated revolver cartridges can be found in autos- the 32 SW target guns, the 38 spl, etc. Often, revolvers are made to use auto pistol runds as well- son=me boutique, some military- the 1917 colt revolver uses moon clips to allow extraction/ejection of fire rounds and is considered the first example of speed loaders for revolvers.

It’s a safe assumption that an off duty cop wasn’t carrying an AR15.
