Among the Australians upgrading their shower, 68 per cent increased its size, with 64 per cent switching over to rainfall showerheads or 62 per cent handheld showerheads.
Around 22 per cent of homeowners included a bathtub large enough to fit a couple while 12 per cent upgraded their showers to accommodate two people.
The study found white was the preferred colour for walls, cabinets and bench tops - and often accented by grey flooring.
Up to 12 per cent of homeowners are getting high-tech upgrade to their bathrooms, including digital controls and built-in sound for showers and self-cleaning and overflow protection for toilets.

Thank you. I’m big into repetition, so the griffins are the repeating element of the griffins on the carved fireplace mantle. And for a damp bathroom, the art has to be waterproof. The head over the toilet was a great disappointment. Liked the sample better. The head was attached to the wall with a vacuum cleaner for suction and inside are the business cards of everyone who worked on the bathroom.

I got my lights up but the Christmas tree is still a couple weeks away.
These are from when the bathroom was first installed. That’s when it was neatest. I’m a terrible housekeeper. I wrecked the glorious floor of the library with a tree a couple years ago, and had to have the part under the tree reinstalled. So now we’re going for fake trees. Sigh.
My taste in home interiors has changed a lot over the years. At one time I had subscriptions to County Living and Victoria magazines and that was my style in my early 20’s through my 30’s – rustic, country, log cabins, Victorian, Early American. Lots of deep colors, walls loaded with pictures and hanging plates and such and lots of knickknacks everywhere, heavy brocade fabrics, heavy drapes and dark wood paneling, dark wood cabinets in the kitchen and (shudders)… wallpaper. Ug. I can’t believe I once like that. Not that I don’t think it can be beautiful but I wouldn’t want to live in a house like that now. Too dark, too heavy and cluttered.
Now days I like a much cleaner and simpler look. Not ultramodern but a bit more minimalist. I like a mix of warmer natural elements like hard woods and field stone with a mix of metal, tile, glass, big windows or window walls, with no or very minimal window coverings, lighter fabrics and color schemes, even more monochromatic – lots of whites and greys but with pops of color here and there.
I’ve even become a fan of the resurgence of mid-century modern look which can be beautiful and warm and inviting if done right. I also like what I think is called “Farmhouse Industrial” which I think is the style of Johanna Gains and has become very popular because of her and her husband’s show Fixer Upper, a mix of old and new, traditional and modern.
I would love to have a spa type bathroom, the big walk in shower with multiple shower heads and a seating bench (and us girls know why). I did once live in a townhouse that had a “soaking tub”. It didn’t have jets but it was extra deep and extra wide. Oh. How I miss that tub.
Bathrooms are great but what I really dream of having one day, like if I ever win the Powerball Lottery, is my dream kitchen.

Like you I always shower so would have opted for a large clear glass fronted shower.
That’s a kitchen for cooking with friends. Lots of room, lots of counter space, separation so people don’t get in each other’s way and a feeling of openness. Great choice.
I replaced a big Jacuzzi tub with a smaller freestanding tub last year. My hot water heater (50 gallons) wasn’t big enough to fill the Jacuzzi, and as a result I never used it.
Bathtub in front of picture window. I had a friend who built a house like that out in the country in the late 60’s (Japanese style). LOLOLOL All was fine until her husband was soaking in the tub and looked up and saw a girl on a horse looking back at him.
THAT is funny! I always thought the way to handle a pure glass window in a bathroom was with a fence and a created garden area.
Smaller homes can save lots of cash in utility bills alone.
They thought they were “way out in the country”!
A friend in NY had a friend in the city with the strangest need to eliminate more and more from her life. I visited her place and it was an imaginative use of almost no space. Then I heard from my friend that she sold it and bought something even smaller, which I still have trouble imagining. I’m a packrat and can barely function in the room that I have. I’m at an age to be trying to figure out how to divest and it’s still beyond me.
Then all that’s left is smiling and waving at the rider.
