Can’t believe I had never heard of them.
If they didn’t pre-date FR I would have thought for sure they got the name off of some random “great name for a band” post.

The Whigs' slogan in the 1840 election was "Van, Van, is a used up man."
Martin Van Buren lost. But at least he got a lake named after him.

>> Are there researchers who believe that the lake level did not vary and that the people who built this castle did so underwater? <<
There are other explanations, including subsidence, where the land immediately around the castle sinks. This happens in Venice, Amsterdam, New Orleans, etc. Given the size and remarkable condition, transference seems unlikely: that would mean that the castle was built on dry land, but somehow slid into the water. And of course, there’s lots of lighthouses slowly fading into the sea as the ground around them erodes. Again: not plausible here, given the condition of the castle, but then that’s the point of the article.

Amazing
Urartu (Armenian: ), also known as Kingdom of Van... was an Iron Age kingdom centred on Lake Van in the Armenian Highlands.
It corresponds to the biblical Kingdom of Ararat.
Approximately during and after Solomons reign

No, but they might have suspected that the land the castle was built on, later subsided. Yes, that's been known to happen since forever.
specially in earthquake country.

Yes, this will be cited as evidence of global warming and rising sea levels centuries ago. And will be used to say that we may see New York under water like this someday. If we're lucky...

The ship find is intriguing.
The lake is at 5300 ft elevation and has no inlet or outlet (it fills from runoff from surrounding mountains).
How did a Russian ship get there? Why? All good questions; Time to fire up Google Earth...

Man, I didn’t know that Climate Change for burning fossil fuels caused the Sea to Rise 4000 years ago. Has AlGore responded?
