As the Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoffs, a head coach is sending a message to the team.
While OU was on its way to a blowout win over Kansas, quarterback Baker Mayfield stunned coaches when he made a crude gesture on the sidelines.
After throwing a three-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews to put OU up 28-3 in the third quarter, Mayfield twice grabbed his crotch and yelled obscenities at the Kansas bench, all caught on camera by ESPN.
After the 41-3 win, Mayfield issued an apology for his actions during the game.
"What I did today, tonight was unacceptable. I am a competitive player but what I did is unacceptable so I apologize. It's disrespectful, it's not the example I want to set, it's not the legacy I want to leave at OU, so I truly do apologize," Mayfield said.
On Monday afternoon, OU head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Mayfield would be punished for his actions.
Riley said that Mayfield will not be listed as a captain or start in Saturday's game against West Virginia. However, he said Mayfield will likely play during the game.

Johnny Manziel, PART DEUX?
Cool ... former Allen (TX) Eagle Kyler Murray will get to start.
Classless Clown Show.
WVU’s quarterback busted/dislocated his finger last weekend (search for image - not for the weak).
I suspect Mayfield will be in before the end of the first quarter.
That was really Low Rent of him.
I have been an Auburn fan all of my life, but Bear Bryant frequently talked about preparation and winning with class. He was spot on then, and spot on now.
Agreed! Led my adopted home town high school to 3 State Championships!
He’s just as bad....
Some years ago, a university in these parts also had a key player who did something that they slammed him for and said he would not start. He didn’t but he was in the game for the second play and played the full game. Let’s see if OU has more class.
Yeah, I saw this. But what angered me was the incessant whining of the PCP (Political Correct P**sies) for 15 minutes about the action. They were a hell of a lot of a lot more quiet when the Jaghawks snubbed Mayfields offer to shake his hand after the coin toss.
A black QB would have gotten away with it by stating he was disrespected or some other nonsense. Short of that, a racism charge would have been his next move.
Racism. A black QB wouldve been praised and defended by the coaches.
Everyone bashes Baker Mayfield but lets the little brown boys from Kansas get a way with much worse.
One more thing. I think those Jaghawks are simply Kneelers in training.
Tell me more.....I saw a clip but wasn't sure who snubbed whom. This would seem to have set the nasty tone for the day, yes ?
Kyler Murray is too short for the big time.
Prior to Mayfield’s actions, one of the Jayhawks lay on top of Mayfield and would not let him up in a timely fashion. One of the OU players came over and threw the Jayhawk player off of Mayfield. For his trouble, the OU player was called for a personal foul.
Mayfield should have shown more class, but who knows how much personal abuse he was taking on the field in the bottom of the piles?
