[I was 19 years old at the time and still living at home. Early in the day I had proudly voted, for the first time, for Ronald Reagan.]
Same here. Graduated at 17 in June 1980, turned 18 on Oct. 26th of that year, ran out and registered and voted for Reagan in my first election.
A proud moment indeed and always a great memory. This country was in dire straits back then.
In the weeks leading up to the election, I advocated for Reagan 2-3 nights per week at the neighborhood gasthaus. I was 26, and spoke excellent German back then. I put my knowledge of history and civics to good use in these discussions with my neighbors.
The deciding blow was cast on Inauguration Day, when the hostages were released by Iran. Although these memories have faded, I'll never forget being asked to sit at the stammtisch, a table reserved for family and close friends of the family. It's an honor I cherish to this day.
I had AuH20 stickers on my car but at eighteen, I couldn’t vote. (they had no problem with sending me to Vietnam, tho’). Richard Nixon was my first vote.
