I was nearing the end of my fourth year in Germany, was living in a small town along the Mosel River. My neighbors pleaded with me to vote for Carter, they were convinced RR would start WW3.

In the weeks leading up to the election, I advocated for Reagan 2-3 nights per week at the neighborhood gasthaus. I was 26, and spoke excellent German back then. I put my knowledge of history and civics to good use in these discussions with my neighbors.

The deciding blow was cast on Inauguration Day, when the hostages were released by Iran. Although these memories have faded, I'll never forget being asked to sit at the stammtisch, a table reserved for family and close friends of the family. It's an honor I cherish to this day.

Great story.

I’ll never forget the smile on everyone’s faces at home when he won.

Things were really bad back then and Carter just preached bad news daily.
