HONOLULU — The U.S. Coast Guard said Monday that two Hawaii women who were lost at sea for five months had an emergency beacon aboard their sailboat that was never activated. U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Scott Carr told The Associated Press that their review of the incident and subsequent interviews with the survivors revealed that they had the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) aboard but never turned it on.

Let's just say that I thought there was something fishey about this story.

Yep, I smelled a rat from the beginning, especially as the media "celebrated" this female "couple's" harrowing experience and bravery - all a hoax to celebrate diversity.

Kinda stupid-wouldn’t you say?

Yes, they are.

‘I’ve never sailed’: women rescued at sea admit they weren’t properly prepared

Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava had planned to sail from Hawaii to Taihiti, but Fuiava had never sailed before

More than a little fishy. They and the dog look more than a little healthy and fit after their little adventure. Just heard reports about this on the radio that casts more doubt on their story.

This appears to be a setup for a fat book and or movie deal.

Had a beacon but didn’t use it?

One of their mothers didn’t bother to report them missing?

Yep, seems odd doesn’t it?

They were sailing to Tahiti, I believe? They sailed from Hawaii on a trip of thousands of miles, yet had no knowledge of some basic emergency procedures? No knowledge of the emergency beacon?

I’m no sailor, but, always thought that a trip into the ocean was more intense and involved more preparation, than taking a boat out on the lake for the afternoon. Just saying.

Yeah, I am thinking this was all for a book and movie deal. They will go on all the news and talk shows. The View, 20-20, Megan Kelly, etc. Hollywood will love it. A “heroic” lesbian couple and their dog. Lost. Surviving for 5 long months at sea against all odds. And without a man! Add the special effects and heavy doses of drama. No doubt it will be nominated for numerous awards.

It is a weird story.

They did have plenty of food, and apparently ample means to create drinking water. The boat’s mast was screwed up and the engine ruined by seawater, but the thing was floating fine until the fishing vessel damaged it. I guess they were just perfectly happy to be out there with no idea where they were or where they were going, not unlike many of us on land.

The video and photos that I looked at, shows a boat that had more wear than six months at sea!
I would like to see photos of that boat as/when they departed!
To paraphrase Ma Boggs, “ True sea tale, my ass!”.

These women are either dumber than dirt or scam artists. I vote for “both”.

Let's just say that I thought there was something fishey about this story.

Is it just me, or did they look really healthy being "stranded" at sea for 5 months? How is it neither looked dehydrated? Where did they get fresh drinking water? Can't drink salt water!

The engine was out and the rigging in the main mast broke. They could
Have easily repaired the rigging by shimming up the mast.

“Carr said the coast guard made radio contact with a vessel that identified itself as the Sea Nymph in June near Tahiti, and the captain said they were not in distress and expected to make land the next morning. That was after the women reportedly lost their engines and sustained damage to their rigging and mast.”
