FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) - A Ferndale woman says DTE Energy shut off her electricity, even though her bills were paid in full.
The problem she says, is that she didn't want the utility to install a smart meter at her home.
"Basically you are being blackmailed," said Kay Watson. "(They are saying) you either take it or we cut power."
Kay Watson is outraged, she says she paid her bill, but DTE disconnected her service on Sunday over her refusal to get a smart meter.
"The guy was here at the door telling me they're going to put in a smart meter and I said no," she said. "He said you're refusing? And I said yeah, so he said we're cutting your power."(snip)
DTE says it contacts customers on several occasions before it takes action. But Watson considers the action a violation
"I consider it a threat to all of our freedoms," she said.
The utility company says it has has installed more than three million smart meters since 2008 and plans to install the remaining electric smart meters this year.
DTE says Watson called Monday asking for a smart meter in order to get her power turned back on.
But Watson says she never requested that and only wants the "opt out." A program which allows a few customers who have concerns to have a smart meter installed with a digital signal turned off.
DTE says at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon a crew went out to Watson's home and provided her with the opt-out option, and her power has since been restored.
DTE says customers who choose to opt out will be charged a one time fee and $9.80 per month for meter readings and related services.

DTE is not the bad guy of the world. Why do people fear smart meters?
No company will tour the country, giving you new technology at about $150 a pop to save you money.
And technically, everything in the system right up to that meter is theirs.
If this gets you upset, but motor vehicle registration does not then we all need to take a step back and think.
There are no shortage of smart meter conspiracies going around. Most of it is about surveillance.
The more reasonable know that it means your bill is going up.
Meter doesn’t belong to her, any more than the transformer. Utility can’t be expected to maintain obsolete equipment just because some lady has an irrational fear of modern technology.
Utility can’t be expected to abide by decades long mutual agreements just because some lady doesn’t want to accept their new deal without negotiation.
Meanwhile they let the existing system fall into disrepair because they hired utility workers who aren't electricians and cannot fix outages. They drive around in trucks as "outage monitors".
We already have smart meters and they can see who's effected by an outage right at the MCR of who is with zero voltage present. Essentially a zero or a one. A normally closed set of contacts.
It's all about social and racial engineering agendas. Hire those unqualified for a job because they were raised by the welfare state. Now instead of smart utility workers we have smart meters.
Three years of reading meters was supposed to be step #1 in training a lineman. Now they took that away.

The power company or the Dem or Big Brother hacks can run and rule over your life .
They can cut your AC or heat without notifying you for any reason .

Because they record every electron of electricity you use, when you used it, and what you used it for.
I don’t see a problem with a woman exercising her right to opt out.

They can cut off your ac or heat without telling you for any reason .
You have no control .
They can flip a switch thousands of miles away and not tell you why .
People are Sheep for letting these meters on there meters .
“Smart” meters are basically RF transmitting meters so that the meterman can simply drive through the neighborhood and his RF unit can get readings on the individual meters without have to walk up to the meter and read it. (In some neighborhoods, there is definitely a safety factor in doing that.)
But the meters can be read by anyone with suitable equipment, so that a person could might be able to tell if someone is on vacation from a serious of readings from a meter. This presumes the meters are not securely encrypted.
You can smartly opt of the Big Brother option of a big brother surveillance meter but she was
Lied to and threatened .
Dte was caught .
They can cut your power off too from a remote location .
That is the real reason for them .
Because there is a better than normal chance they will start a fire. Especially in old breaker/service panels.

The installed on on our house last week. We came home to a note on the door telling us they had installed it.

She has a fear of being snooped upon ,, maybe not today but as all her appliances ,, everything from toasters and AC ,, to her TV and refrig will as they are replaced be reporting to somebody every action she takes and every show she watches... This will lead to higher electric rates and control over your actions... it’s a foot in the door from a public utility that we can’t live without.. I have no problem with remote meter reading but this is a constant surveillance device.
