The story is funny not because the man is a "great guy," or because we delight in or laugh at the travails of the family but because some people are indeed so outrageous (outrageously independent, outrageously stubborn, outrageously bonkers) as to do such a thing. It is okay to laugh because, in light of all the insanity and destruction in the world, here is just 100% pure wacked kookiness where nobody really got hurt.
