I remember back in the 80's, telling women to smile was a big thing. I was in the Navy, and I couldn't walk down the passageway without a man barking "Smile!" at me as he passed. And usually, they weren't smiling, but we were expected to grin like chimps at every man who glanced at us.

The one I'll always remember was the guy who told me to smile just after I'd left the Chaplain's office. I'd just been notified that my father had died unexpectedly, and I was rather in shock, and this guy told me to smile. I told him about my father and he scampered away, mortified. I do hope that he, at least, never again ordered a complete stranger to smile at him.
