Ames High School Band Members Leave Field Before Playing National Anthem

The national anthem football controversy continues to have an impact at the high school level.

The Des Moines Register reports 13 members of the Ames High School band walked off the field before playing the national anthem on Friday night. This happened before the school hosted Lincoln on the football field.

Earlier on Friday, student leaders read a statement to their classmates saying, "the decision to change from a patriotic USA to pink-out theme for the student section was the decision of the Ames High student body alone. Is this political? Maybe. But we are proud of how our students showed great leadership today by coming together."

The statement also encouraged students to link arms at the football game, show love, and pack the stands. Efforts to reach the high school principal and the band director have not been returned.

When I was in high school, the marching band members were almost all in the academic program geared towards college prep. The football team was mostly comprised of guys in the commercial or general programs. Most of them ended up in blue collar jobs with a kid or two before they turned 23 or were drafted. I played on the varsity team as a sophomore in the fall of 1962 but my father pulled me off the team in order to help him build a fallout shelter in our early 1700’s stone springhouse. Our farm was about 25 miles due west from center city Philadelphia which was assumed to be one of the Russian nuke targets. After that season, I played in the marching band until I graduated. Funny thing: I went to our class 50th reunion two years ago and the girls who were there who played in the band were the smartest in my class (only 105), all were National Honor Society, and they looked to be the best preserved women. In my junior year, just about all my classmates favored Barry Goldwater enthusiastically.

I went to high school in the 1980s. The band people drank, smoked pot, and screwed.

If America was attacked, and teetering on the brink of being over run, does anyone think any of those band members would life a finger to save America or protect other Americans? I don’t.

Band members have a very high percentage of high school graduation and college entrance.

I realize now, through America, how people obediently let themselves lose all liberty, be put in concentration camps and prisons never to be seen again. Ready for the Pink Mafia month? Obviously it has taken over the school in this case. Watch for it in the similarly America hating NFL.

My 12 year old granddaughter was given the honor of carrying the American flag at her Middle School’s football this weekend. She loved it. And a northern Virginia school to boot. Too many combat veterans and career military people as parents/relatives who don’t put up with any PC protest crap.

Unless conservatism reproduces itself on a massive scale, it isn't going to end well for this country.

The outcome will be that the conservative youth will have a great advantage over the "snow flakes". They will be the leaders of the herd.

My kids are a little ahead of the "snow flakes" in age but they were home schooled, taught the value of work, encouraged to be entrepreneurial, got college degrees that taught them how to do something, had a plan and executed it.

My daughter is 31 and a millionaire. My son is 26 and the way he is going will be a millionaire too.

So someday, they can take care of Mom and Dad.

The liberal bullies won’t stop as long as people continue to kowtow to their various demands.
And they keep the list long and issue radical ones from time to time so you’ll give in on a little one once in a while.
Give liberals this - they know how to work incrementally for generations.

"fire the band director"

No until we see if those thirteen are still in the band.

Knowing out school system and our band leaders, those punks would have been out of the band before they reached the sidelines...

Two recent band alumni just confirmed...

I’m the opposite. My parents were liberal idiots. I have no kids and I will be eating cat food sooner than I want. I’m hoping I don’t live that long.

When I was in the band in high school, such behavior would have been unthinkable. Besides being immediately kicked out of the band, any member who protested the National Anthem would have been ostracized by the whole student body as a traitor to his country.

The changes in our culture since my youth sometimes make me feel that I must be from a far away galaxy.
