Gavin Baker, a star stock-picker at Fidelity, was reportedly fired after he allegedly sexually harassed a junior female staffer, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing an attorney for the staffer and people familiar with the situation.

The female employee is a 26-year-old equity research associate who is currently on leave, the Journal reported.

A spokesman for Baker told the WSJ he “strenuously” denies any “supposed” allegations of sexual harassment.

You can't make this up . . . a Fidelity Fund manager fired for 'infidelity' . . . the article states he's engaged to another Fidelity manager but harassed a third employee . . .

Supposed? Are there allegations or not?

You don’t fire someone in this position unless the investigation turned up something. This is mutual fund management, not politics or Hollywood. Fidelity is a private company run by a woman in a liberal city . . . not smart to even think about it there.

What they have to show is that

1) they had a romantic/sexual relationship
2) he is in a superior position to her in the same work area, not necessarily direct management authority

They were both in the research area. The relationship may have been entirely consensual and based in mutual interest, but since it could be construed as a quid pro quo, it opens the firm to liability if they do not take action.

Well—Women don’t lie about these things.

Or so we’re told.

Unless the perp is a Democrat.

And the target is “asking for it.”

“the article states he’s engaged to another Fidelity manager but harassed a third employee . . .”

The claim could be true or it could be a women scorned set him up. Best to avoid romantic relationships at work.

They weren’t both in the research department. He ran the Fidelity OTC Portfolio Fund and she was a junior analyst. In the Mutual Fund world that is definitely a power differential issue. He clearly could influence her career path.

OK, I didn’t read enough to see that he was a PM and she was in research.

In either case, there would be potential for a quid pro quo, and thus subject to sexual harassment litigation, which was the point I was trying to make.
